I have been reloading my 45/70 using IMR 3031 and have been getting OK results, but a friend of mine suggested trying Accurate Arms 5744. I was wondering if anyone out there has tried this powder with the 45/70 and how did you like it ?

I am using Trapdoor loads with 300 grain JHP in my Sharps. The old body is not up to the hot loads and 400+ grain bullets Very Happy .

Thanks

Ken

I haven't tried any Accurate powder but IMR 3031 works great and Hodgdon Varget works just fine in mine. Both shoot nice tight groups. The only problem with Varget is that there is some unburned powder left when shooting max or near max loads.

My preference has been to use IMR4895 with great results. The recoil can be punishing in the heavier charges and accuracy was terrific. All the best...

I have never tried IMR 4895 in mine. What is your max load? I only have one reloading manual that lists a load with IMR 4895 and that has a max of 57.0 gr with a vel of 1900, the rest of my manuals don't list it. I'm just curious because it is always enjoyable to try different loads. I mean why else reload, right?

1895ss,
Sierra and Speer reloading mauals show .45/70 loads for: the 1873 Springfield and Remington rolling blocks, 1886 Winchester and Model 1895 Marlin and Ruger No. 1 and No. 3 rifles. In the Sierra Rifle Reloading Manual 3rd Edition using 300 grain jacketed bullets they list the following loads for the Marlin 1985 using IMR4895:

59.2 grs. (1,950 f.p.s.) (2,533 ft.lbs.)

60.4 grs. (2,000 f.p.s.) (2,664 ft.lbs.)

61.6 grs. (2,050 f.p.s.) (2,799 ft.lbs.)

Hope this helps. All the best...
Gil

Thanks Gil
I generally shoot mostly 350 gr and some 405 gr bullets.

Very Happy I'm shooting 54 grains of 3031 in Winchester cases pushing a Barnes 300 grain hollow point. Browning 1895 High Wall shoots a nice tight group. Pretty lines too on that octagonal barrell.

I use 55gr AA2495 with a 420gr pure lead paper patched bullet in my 1895G. Gives me 1922fps and 1.5 3shot groups at 100.

Cool I use H322 in my 14" Contender with a 300gr HP or a 335gr hard cast. It really thumps whatever ya hit, never needed a follow up. It seems to burn really clean but don't know how it would do in a longer barrel. Cool

Have you folks tried the other Hodgdon powders for .45-70 H4198, H4895, H335, Benchmark? I have those plus Varget and Reloader 7.

I've tried H4198, Benchmark, Varget, Re7 and HS-6.

H4198 and Re7 give me the highest velocities with jacketed bullets. Varget provides mid-range velocities that are superbly accurate. Benchmark for heavy hardcast like the 460's. HS-6 in tiny ammounts (13.5g with 300-350g hardcast) for light recoiling, very accurate plinkers.

Have an unopened pound of H322. By all repors this will generate velocities equal to H4198 but at lower pressures.

Thanks for the info. Guys on the old Marlin site liked Hodgdon but a lot of the load data I see is with other powders. Got most of my powder, primers, etc using $20 vouchers from Cabela's and credit card points. Looked up what Hodgdon had listed for a gun then checked what Cabela's had in stock. Also got Reoader 7 & 22. Worked up some loads for 405gr. Rem with H4198 and will do some for 350 fp Hornady for my next trip to the range.

The people at Hodgdon Powder advocate using 4895 in loads as small as 60% of max for reduced recoil and young people's loads. They also caution that 4895 is the ONLY powder to attempt this with. The IMR4895 is a good powder for many calibers, but may not be the ideal powder. Just a thought.
