Latest toy, a Remington 700 VTR in .223. Scope is a Burris Fullfield 2 4.5-14X with Ballistic Plex reticle on a Weaver base and Warne rings. Harris bipod.

The barrel shape and muzzle brake were what caught my eye.

I'm working on loads and then bring on those varmints!

Neat looking Rifle, let us know how it groups. What type of finish is on the barrel?

To be honest I don't know what Remington used for that finish. I looked at their website and it doesn't say either.

That is one nice set up. I had a Winchester Model 70 Coyote in 223 that I gave to my little brother. I was a tack driver, I'm sure that Remington will do the same. What twist is the barrel?

1 turn in 9" twist. Got the scope on paper, maybe 1.5" groups with "factory reloads". I'll try some match ammo when I get a chance, as well as some of my own loads.

My Winchester was also a 1 in 9, supposedly you can launch a little heavier bullet (>55) with that twist. Although my rifle really liked the 52 grain hollow points. It's great for rabbits, fox, coyote, prairie dogs, I don't see squirrels where I hunt but I would guess it's good for them too. I'd be interested in what bullet weight it likes best.

The barrel almost looks like a "powder coat" finish unless my eyes are tricking me...which they have started since I turned 40...
Anywho, it is a great looking rifle. Is that the way it came from the factory??

Double, yes, its a factory gun.

Mikeleduc, I'm going to start with 55 grainers and work up to 70s, just to see if I can. I'll share the results after I have time to shoot.

Finally got to do a little load testing in the VTR. Eh! Neutral

Used a 60 grain V-Max over Varget powder. Best group was about 0.75". Almost all groups had two bullets touching and another almost "flyer". It could have been me, I'm pretty rusty (although I did manage a 0.25" group with an .223 Encore right before that). I plan to check all the screws and try again.

The average accuracy of those barrels is so good that Remington has applied for a patent on the barrel profile. Those are flats, not flutes.

The finish is a rust blue that looks black over a AlO2 blasting. The VTR logo is cut into the barrel with a laser engraver, and you should see the sparks! I would post a picture, but cameras are not allowed on the manufacturing line.

FALPhil, I think you missed the intended pun.

I guess it was a poor attempt at a funny on my part.

I'll stick with the day job !!!!!!
