I'm looking to buy some comfortable waterproof boots insulated (not sure how much) for a hunting trip. Any suggestions? I will be walking a lot so comfort is probably number one.

I've had Redwings, Wolverines, Matherhorns, etc. but am curious about others opinion.
THANKS,
J~

What type of hunting will you be doing and how important is the type of sole for walking?

I bought some Danner Predator 1000g thinsulate boots though Cabela's last year and they were great comfort right out of the box. They were about $180.00.

I had a pair of the Cat - Arctic FX boots and loved them, but they wore out. They are steel toe, and pretty heave though. Extremely comfortable boots though. I now have a pair of carhartt work boots, steel toe, but they aren't insulated. I just started breaking them in a couple of days ago. They are starting to get really comfortable.

SwampFox,
The hunting will be tromping through the mountains out west so I assume an aggressive sole would be needed.

Doublejs, I have worn Cabela's 6-point non-insulated for years ,8-10 maybe. Before going to Africa a year ago I bought a new pair. $80.. I have used them all over Colo. and Wyo. Being retired and not likeing the cold I've not hunted in the extreme cold. Muzzleloading and early season. One thing to remember is you can always take them back if needed! I have a buddie who swears by their Mendels and he is tougher than me, and hunts in the cold and wears them ice fishing.Where are you thinking of coming out west?

Best boots that I ever purchased, and I'm still using is the Cabela's Kangaroo boots. I've had them for many years, and they still look like new.
What is great about them is that with the Kangaroo leather, there was no break in period. They were comfortable from the start.
I've never been wet in them, or cold in the fall and early winter.
They are super light.

where out west???
been living out here awhile and a trick i learn and make sure you have the metal plate in the sole. have saved my feet many times.
wore them religiously when i lived up high in the colorado rockies.
keep in mind also the total weight of the boots it wears on you and tires you out as you trudge through alot of the mud and high grasses out here.

Why would you need a metal plate in the sole? The only time I have heard of needing that was during the Vietnam days when panji spikes in pits were a problem.

I still have a brand new pair of Vietnam issue Dunlop boots with the stainless steel plate in the sole.

Keetoowah is totally correct when she says the weight of the boot is an issue. It is surprising how quickly you will knock up wearing heavy boots.

Vince,

There are alot of things you can step on to get through the sole, and not just made made items too. Smile

In Northern Ontario its mainly shales (rock, flat, in layers) and the like, and when hunks of that break off from the larger rock formations in the Canadian Shield. They can get mighty pointy. And I've stepped on them (what can I say I like hiking at a decent pace off the marked and cleared trails) having them cut the sole all the way to the plate at times! Shocked

Keetoowah, where did you hunt in Colo. that you needed steel arch supports? I thought they were only a military spec. All supports I've seen are fiber glass or hard plastic. Having the extra weight ab]nd the steel in your boot is exposing your feet to more cold. I had to wear steel toe shoes for over thirty years for work and they ARE COLD. Also I like a moderate agressive sole as they don't plug up with mud as easily. The only thing I ever had poke through my boot was catus and that was from the side! Tennis shoe are for emergency use only when you don't have a hunting boot. My hunting boots are just for that, not work, the lighter the better, and water proof. Where were you in Colo?. I spent over 30 yrs. in the Loveland Ft. Collins area and hunted from the Utah border to Nebr. Never made it very far south. Now in Wyo. where it don't turn blase orange in Oct. and can hunt for more than a week per spieces! Enjoy

Sage,

Most "safety" shoes nowadays do not have steel for the sole or toes they got that hard plastic/fiberglass and are labeled as "Steel". Smile

It depends on the what Niosh or Osha calls for. I believe mine safty still calls for steel. It also depends what material meets the safty standards. They are still clod in teh winter and heavy! Waiting for the wife to wear her Crocks out in the catus or run wher a rattler says she is getting to close. Not many in the mall thou!
