Hey Joe
I have a friend that took his out after only 1 winter using it. He didn't like haulin' bags of pellets home and constantly loading it. I don't think it would bother me though, and if I could get one "for next to nothing", wouldn't hesitate to do it.
I would wonder why yer friend is gettin' rid of it though, were I you. HIS costs to heat will be rising the same as yours......

I used to have a house with a coal furnace in it. It was very cheap to operate, but you had to pull the clinkers out a couple of times a week, and that was a PITA.

Joe,
I use a fireplace to heat my home. I wouldn't have it any other way. I just like a fireplace. I don't see where cleaning out a pellet stove would be any worse than cleaning out wood ashes from a fireplace. To me, it's the same. Cost wise, I don't know. My backup system is a propane fueled central heat unit. We don't use the fireplace or propane heater very much during the year, because of where we are located (South Texas), maybe off and on for 30 days a year, maybe less. Our main utitlty cost is the AC unit.

I just talked to my buddy he told me I can have it so I'm gonna get it can't beat free I think it's made by Breckwell. I think there supose to be pretty good. Anything should be cheaper than paying for fuel oil this winter I'm afraid to think what it will cost then .

A friend of mine has one and he hates. The feed auger keeps getting clogged and jambed.
This unit replaced an outdoor furnace which had to be filled every 12hrs.

I just went and picked it up. It seems to be in very good shape. I have plenty of time before fall to get it installed. It will be my early summer project I appreciate the responces.

I have several friends who run a pellet stove, the key is to buy a pallet of the pellets (say that real fast) at a time if you have the room, my buddy usually goes through a couple pallets each year, but he has a large house and our winters are pretty long here - in fact I just burned my stove a couple weeks ago to chase away the crisp morning. I know the stores here usually have a mark down the end of Winter and you can usually get a good deal on a pallet - I think around $150-200. I have 2 wood stoves personally, if I were to replace them or build a new home, I would make sure the pellet stove was in there. Provided all parts are working, you can pretty much set it and forget it - unlike the wood stove which I have to bank at night and fuss with during the day. Enjoy it.

We have been kicking around that idea as well, Propane last year was CRAZY :-x, I dont see it getting any better this winter.
They are expensive around here though $700.00 and up. But when you consider we paid more than that in a year for Propane fills it'll pay for itself in the first year. And it will run on corn too they tell me.

That price isn't too bad around here the cheapest I have seen is around $1,300 to 3,000. Breckwell doesent make this model anymore but the models that are similiar are around $2,200 so I think I did good for free . It looks like pellets are around $250-$300 a ton thats a lot better than $4.00 + a gallon for fuel oil .

Pellet stove? I have a free standing wood stove in the den that burns oak and seven ceiling fans. I only need two of them to movethe heat around the whole 1850 square foot home. I don't bother to bank it at night. house temperature startsat 72* and by morning has only dropped to 60*... Wife and I use lots of blankets and each other to stay warm at night. Like the pellet stove I have to clean it out about once a week. Not really a bother compared to running the propane furnace. Actually I prefer the heat from the fireplace over the furnace anyway. It seems much warmer...Reminds me...I need to run the brush down the flue before winter...

Tractor Supply they should have pretty good prices we have one right up the road I didn't check on prices there and like you if I was buying a new one I think I would get one that burns corn as well. Yup
Vince ther compressed pellets from saw dust one thing I didn't no is ya can get differen't grades of pellets. I'm not sure what kinda difference there are in them though. They say the price on pellets is going up too because of the slump building new homes, saw mills are not cutting as much lumber figures hugh
