Like Bushmaster, I think you would be happier with the 30/06 given the uses you outline. The '06 can toss bullets of the same weight 150-200 fps faster than the .308. Though a great cartridge, the .308 pretty much tops out with the 180-grain bullets while the 30/06 can even use custom bullets up to 250 grains if you really wanted to.

If you are really intent on the .308, I would concentrate on the premium bullets such as Barnes, Nosler and etc. for penetration and expansion while allowing you to use bullets in the 150-grain range that will perform like heavier bullets.

Smile I reload for both calibers, and after years of trying different loads in both calibers -I prefer the '06 to reload for.It just is not as "finicky"as the 308 to me. BTW-I hoard brass for both calibers also, its like my "gold dabloons"as the price of loaded ammo and even once fired brass keeps going higher! Shocked

One last thing Phill21...I believe the .30-06 has more kick to the shoulder then the .308...You can stand recoil can't you? Very Happy

Felt recoil would have been my only argument for the 308 in the heavier bullet weights.

Over 165 gr, the 308 loses ground FAST,and since the game you're seekin seems to require heavy boolits the '06 seems to be the only way to go...

A 300 Win Mag WILL announce it's presence, specially sittin at the bench. If'n you can fire the 300, you SHOULD be OK with an '06.

I'm ok with the screaming, I'm half deaf anyway; something to do with listening to tractor engines my whole life. So, go ahead and scream.

The 30-06 does kick a little harder than the 300 Win, especially with the heaver loads.

I don't think the 06 can hold a candle to the 300 Win Mag in that category.

I'm with Dimitri on this. With all other things being equal (rifle weight, bullet weight) and working at top performance levels, the .300 Winchester will produce around 11 foot-pounds of recoil energy over the 30/06. The increase in velocity and the amount of powder used results in greater recoil. Recoil energy is a product of velocity, pressure and bullet weight (powder weight is included since it also acts as ejecta) attenuated by the weight of the respective firearm. You can run a quick check by crunching the numbers through Point Blank.

With two rifles, that weight the same, the .300WinMag will kick more.
However I'm wondering if one of the Light Model 70's would punch you more than the .300.
With a super-light gun, you have to expect more recoil.

I'm with the guys who say the the .300WinMag will no doubt give you more recoil, unless, you go Super Light with the 30-06.

I guess I interpreted that incorrectly the first time I read it...

I thought you meant the '06 didn't kick more than the .308...

Eric, for camels in Minnesota you need that good cyclic rate too right? I mean, first the jockey then the second shot at the camel before it spooks and runs?
