I've been looking at getting a sig 556. Anyone own one of these or shoot one much?

Looking for some first hand information on them.

How would they compare to my DPMS in accuracy, durability, reliability, among other things?

Good question...Anybody?

The only Sig I have an interest in is the Revolution 1911 C3 compact carry...Just barely under $1000. Way to expensive for me right now...

I got to fire a few rounds from a SIG 556 at the range once... Does that count? SIG has an excellent reputation but I didn't shoot it enough to form an opinion.

They will never come to Canada due to US export regulations for us normal types. But we have real Swiss Arms PE90s instead.

The SIG may be the best of the bunch. Certainly the NRA thought so when they voted it the AR of the year. What differentiates them is the piston system, ala AK, that provides an upgrade from the normal AR15.

Like the std AR15, attention to cleaning is an important thing. Accuracy on all top models of ARs tends to be superb (Armalite, Bushmaster, S&W, Rock River) and exceeds DPMS in quality. The degree of accuracy sought, however, is an important distinction that needs to be defined as most ARs certainly get the job done, coyotes for example.

Best recommendation is to handle the SIG and make a direct comparison. The SIG balances differently than conventional ARs. Sight systems differ, too.

How would a DPMS be inferior in quality to a Bushmaster, Armalite, etc.?

The way I understand it even the generics are forged at the same place. Does the assembly make the difference or the name?

I met a police officer at a gun shop not too long back and his service weapon was a generic AR he'd made himself.

Just curious? Confused

The forgings may or may not be source at the same place but remember a forging is simply a piece of metal, machining and assembly whether made of a forging, casting or solid stock is much more important in any product not just guns.

I digress. What makes the DPMS inferior ot others?

I used forging as a simple example. Isn't MIL-SPEC still MIL-SPEC?

I'm not trying to be difficult, I really want to know. Very Happy

The Sig 556 is hilarious. While the 550 is an awesome AK derivative, with an outstanding folding stock, SigArms put a buffer tube stock on the 556. They must think that North Americans are a bunch of morons. Who in the name of Mohammed H. Prophet would put a buffer tube stock on an non-buffertube rifle????

I shot the StG 550 back in the early '90s. It was and is the best and most accurate AK I have ever fired. I especially liked the way the magazines clipped together for rapid reload. The sights were a whole lot like HK/G-3 sights - very easy to use. I thought the bipod was kind of flimsy, but my Swiss buddy assured me that it worked well when needed.

I have not shot the 556. I am working on getting a Bushmaster piston upper (hopefully at a significant discount).

Hi FALPhil. Good luck on getting a POF for the Bushmaster at a reduced price. Even if you pay full boat, it is a superb upgrade and does away with that annoying "spoing" of the spring.

I will defer to your expertise on the SIG 556, however, I have shot one of my friend's 556 and was impressed with it enough to sell my Rock River and get in line for the next one coming to the gunstore. Accuracy was amazing, take down a cinch and it simply fit better for me. But, time may tell a different story.

It helps when you have contacts on the "inside".
