Why did you quit hunting in peanut fields? Some of my best hunting was in peanut fields.

I don't have a 35 whelen (I wish I did) but I do have a 35 remington and a 30-06 and several more big game calibers. I have used my 30-06 on many many big game hunts with great success. In fact that was the only big game rifle I had for quit a few years.

I'm doin' fine. I don't get on here much anymore.

I may hafta disagree...

The .308 Win does enjoy an advantage in lighter weight bullet loads.

165 grain weight, we're about equal...

180 grains and heavier....'06 starts to shine...

Well lets see, according to the reloading manual in my hand (Hornady) it says that the Hornady 150 gr bullet #3031 can be safley loaded to a vel of approx 2800 fps out of a .308 and at approx 3000 fps out of a .30-06. According to my calculations that gives the .30-06 the edge by about 200 fps more velocity. Okay lets try a 110 gr. Hornady #3010 bullet .308 = 3200 fps and 30-06 ................... well you guessed it 3400 fps .......... again a couple hundred fps faster and I believe the faster bullet would likely have more foot lbs of energy as well. I don't know of any .308 cal bullet that won't be faster out of a .30-06 then the .308. I reload both cartridges and have found you can get the .308 a bit closer then that to .06 velocities but certainly not duplicate or exceed.

When it comes to hunting, anything the .308 can do, the .30-06 does just a bit better. The .308 case is smaller then the .06, holding approx 10 gr less water, obviously the 06 holds more powder. That doesn't mean I believe the .308 is no good. There are lot's of cartridges that are close with small but significant differences.

But be my guest and disagree all you want. It doesn't matter to me.

Some of my best hunting was on peanut fields too.

I moved away from South Georgia and spent several years overseas. When I came back, it was the middle of the Carter recession, and all my land-owning friends had taken jobs in the city to survive. Then I started having kids, etc., etc. These days, I don't know anyone who farms peanuts anymore.

That will put a crimp in some fine hunting ground.

Yes, the peanut market has gone to heck in a hand basket. The government wants farmers to raise peanuts for world market price (to compete against China and South America. The world market price ranges from $350 to $450 per ton on an average year. It costs us about $600 per ton to raise them. That sucks. The county that I live in use to grow 17,000 acres of peanuts (I used to plant 500 acres). Currently, due to the world market prices, there are only about 3,000 acres planted in this county (out of habit). This is a losing cause. This is the way most ag products are going. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that we have out-breaks of e-coli and salmonella poisoning. Filthy conditions and the use of raw sewage in third world countries are influencing our food.

I guess this goes in another forum. Sorry.

Cary

Since I don't reload Honrady boolits for .30 cals, I'll refer to the Speer manual. (copy-n-paste from the last time we had this discussion):

A quote from the Speer #13 Manual (page 281):

"We've had many callers ask why the 308 velocities shown are equal to or better than some of the 30-06 velocities shown a few pages ahead. They ask if it's a mistake. No, it's real, and there are two reasons.

First, a compact case and a higher pressure limit give the 308 an edge with bullets up to 150 grains. Things are about equal with the 165 grain bullets, but the big 30-06 case's ability to hold a lot of slow-burning powder gives it the upper hand with heavy bullets.

The second reason is the sporting rifles we used to record final velocities. Both have 22" barrels and were bought at the same time. The 30-06 sporter posted velocities about 50-100 ft/sec behind the 24" pressure barrel. That's normal. On the other hand, the 308 sporter was consistently equal to or slightly faster than the pressure barrel................."

Dont make much difference to me either, it's like arguing winchester vs remington...

pick which one YOU use better and stick with it....

Honrady is leading the way in new cartridge development lately...

The 30TC comes to mind...

NEW ways to use the powder column more efficiently....

Well hunterjoe check out this link data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp
The 125 gr Sierra load in a 308 W has a muzzle velocity of 3194 and the pressure is at 58100 psi and the 30-06 with the same bullet has a muzzle velocity of 3334 and pressure is at 58000 psi. Not only is the veocity higher in the 06 but the pressure is 100 psi lower??????????????????????????? Hmmmmmmmmm

Then again, I suppose you'll tell me this reputable site is full of B.S. Very Happy

1895,

Your supporting the flames now! Shocked

Anyways they are both modern rounds with the same case head so similar maximums apply to them.

I've been a Flames fan since 1980 when they moved to Calgary from Atlanta.

And your right the pressure max is the same in both the 308W and the 30-06.

If a load manual says the 30-06 should be at a lower pressure then the 308Win, to give the 308Win higher velocities over the 30-06, it will go into the circular file if it was mine.

All SAFE maximum loads for a 308 will be even safer in a 30-06 but the safe max loads in a 30-06 will NOT be safe in a 308Win.
