Nothing wrong with a .308...its a great calibre.
Its a bit too heavy for the smaller game that we have here in Oz...but more than adequate for the bigger stuff...even buffalo with a well placed shot using the right bullet. Gelan has chosen the .308 calibre path with his Whisper...all he has to do is remember to put a little powder in his loads.
(Be a while before you live that one down mate. Its been 3 years now since I forgot to take my bolts on a hunt and I still get reminded. )
I still maintain that the .243 is the best all round calibre for Oz. Sure, there are better calibres, both bigger and smaller, that do a better job than the .243 in some areas, but overall the .243 is very difficult to beat.
Cheers, Vince

Don't feel bad Gelan, I shot a tree a number of years ago while hunting deer and I get reminded of it several times each fall as hunting season approaches.

Nah mate never feel bad for a good experience.
Whenever anything bad happened you feel bad at the time it happens, but a few days weeks hours etc down the line, it became hilarious..
Yeah.. now I can joke about it and not feel bad.
I believe Vince also want to kick his own bony butt when he forgot the bolt

Well I've finally made a decision,
I've decided to go with a CZ. I spent quite a while at a gun shop yesterday and after checking out pretty much everything they had the CZ seemed to stand out to me. If I had a bigger budget I'd have considered weatherby MkV and Sako also but they are well outside my price range. I loved the look of the weatherby vanguard delux but their actions seem a bit sloppy (with all my knoledge and experience he he he). I thought the actions on the Tikka were pretty sweet but just something about them didn't quite do it for me, the stock on the varmint's seems especialy cheap and nasty. I did like the feel of a Ruger but I just prefer the CZ.
So there you have it decision made, now I just have to wait till after my wedding, and sell a car and I can purchase my shiny new toy.
Then I'll have to start saving for the Weatherby MKV Ultramark or delux that I'd love to have (and make my dad nice and jelous with)

Great choice Beast,
The add for the CZ's certainly has a couple of the best looking rifles you could ever own.
What calibre?
Did you go for the .898Ultra Mag?
or the .000112 Lightning

nah gunna stick with a .243, I'll look at something bigger for my next one, if I'm allowed that is, though it didn't take much convincing to let me get my first, will just have to give it some time an make sure I use this one regularly

Will Definately post some pics, you wont be able to wipe the smile off my face once she comes.
I'm going with a 550, probable either the Lux or MC. I figure their rifles are basicly the same just the stock that differs. Gun shops have only had the standard to hold but from other makes I do like a monte carlo stock, but at the end of the day cost will be a big part of the deciding factor.
My wedding is on the 16th next month, getting kind of scary, I'm sure it was 12 months to go just the other day
