I have eaten armodillo. I actually liked it and thought it was good.
I am originally from Texas Hill country, born and raised and trying to get back there.
I do not hunt anymore. and when I did. I usually eat what ever I shot. I did shoot a skunk one time and did not eat it, but I did not feel bad about that.
I never shot one with a gun. I have only shot them with a bow and arrow.
I stopped and would not shoot anymore of them because I noticed they were getting to be not too many of them around. I miss seeing them.
it was good to see a picture of one again, maybe next time it will be a live one.

If I can think to take my camera with me, next time I go visit one of my buddy's (150 mile trip), I'll take a couple pictures of their "pet" armadillos. The kids have 2 armadillos that they walk around on a leash and play with like they are puppies. They are actually neat and interesting little pets....

I certainly don't think we should worry overmuch about what someone from PETA, etc. thinks about photos of animals harvested, those folks are plain nuts anyway! I do think that photos of animals we've hunted should show a little respect for the animal, and I am not implying that the photos at the start of this thread didn't. |
Mike,
"Harvesting" is a PC term adopted to make killing sound more friendly. I don't consider my guns "harvest tools", I consider them killing tools.

This is a hunting forum aint it? How is a video link showing how to field dress a mule deer any less disturbing than the sight of a armadillo who has been shot and very likely died very very fast?
Its a sad fact that shooting critters can and does make a mess at times.
And as said by "D", PETA does not need our help making issues on their own. |
I agree totally. If you don't want to see pictures or hear about animals being shot, (harvested) then you're at the wrong forum.

AND....
Many among us have killed a critter for no other reason than to kill it....
Vince kills crows (OK he TRIES to kill crows) with no intention of eatin' em
I kill groundhogs, and wouldn't eat one if I was starving...
What about Rockchucks?...What purpose do they serve??...other than target practice???
how many prairie dog hunters are out there that have never been impacted negatively by one???

Yes we all kill for "fun" its part of life. I am especially responsible for that when fishing. Mind you I give all of those fish away. I only keep for myself the Yellow Perch I catch anyways that's not the point.
My point is this thread has made me wonder what Armadillo tastes like and makes me want to go down way south to try it.

I've eaten them before and they are not bad. When I was younger, I used to go out at night with a dog that was trained to find them. I'd shoot them and deliver them to some poor families that lived in a nearby town.
They paid me one dollar each.
As far a cattle hurthing themselves in armadillo holes; that's not a problem. I was raised on a cattle ranch and have been ranching on my own, my whole life, and have never had that problem. Cattle rairly ever take off running (for the fun of it...like a horse). I've seen them step in armadillo or badger holes, many times, and they never seem notice it. They walk around really slow. I'm sure that under a rare occurance, it could happen.
Now horses are different...they run for the fun of it and rairly look where they are going.
About 10 years ago a virus or some form of illness almost killed the entire armadillo population around South Texas. We started seeing hundreds of them laying in the woods...dead. The population is starting to come back. I'm starting to see them run over on the roads now.
I'm like Geland, I don't shoot an animal that I'm not going to eat, or is not dangerous (like a rattlesnake), or a preditor to my chickens or cattle, or destructive to crops or property. Armadillos can be destructive to yards. They will dig up lawn grass looking for grubs.
I like seeing my ranch teaming with wildlife.

So would you kill 'em or not???
Or do they hafta get into your "yard' before you kill one??
hogs are a nuisance there, do you eat every one you kill??
what about javelinas??? You like the ranch teaming with them??

I'm told that groundhogs can be good eating. After all, they are eating the same stuff beef cattle eat. 'Course I haven't tried one yet...

Woke up this morning feeling real sh--y, the meds do that a lot. Was not looking forward to the day, but wanted to a least read the new posts.
You guys are a blast, thanks for brightening what will otherwise be a dismal day.
