I know it's ugly I give you that, But I own pretty guns, and I've never seen a synthetic I liked the looks of, So I don't feel like I am gaining or losing anything there.

What’s so hard to understand??? I don’t like Savage!!!

The 700 extractor may not be the best design out there, I don’t dispute that.
I just don’t buy into the hype that everyone should replace them with the Sako style.
You yourself just stated that only 3 has ever passed through your hands and you see more in a week than the average Joe sees in a lifetime.

It sounds to me that you’ve already made your mind up as to how this build will be done. But there seems to be a hesitation of doubt going on!!!

All that matters is that you like the gun and it runs good .In the end it doesn't really matter if you get 1'' or 2'' inch groups so much as the gun works good for you .

Chambered 221, are you getting excited? That's cool! It's true that 3 is a low number. And there are probably more 700's or 7's out ther then anything else. What I don't understand is the fanaticism that surrounds these guns. Remingtons investment in the realm of marketing has sure paid off. I've even purchased a few myself. I owned a 7mm R.U.M. the first year they fielded the cartridge. To say those rifles were as good or better than my other rifles would definitly be a stretch. Have you ever owned a Savage? I'm not hesitant in the slightest, I just like hearing and discussing people's experiences and opinions. That's what forums are for. Right? Others have expressed their like for Savages, would you rather I just build it the way you want me to? What experience are you basing your opinion on? Anyway back to the topic at hand. The 180 Bergers came today and I'll try and post a picture of the cartridge assembled to a c.o.a.l. of 3.5"

Not really just saying how I feel on the matter !!!
My first groundhog was with a 722(forerunner to the 700) in .222
My first deer rifle was a 700, maybe that’s why I‘m partial to them.
But the fact is they are the most widely used platform for building a custom.
It’s also the most copied.
Bench rest shooters even chose them over the great pre64 model 70 in the beginning years, yes I like them too but wouldn’t use one for a build.
You don’t have to agree with it, you can go a different route, won’t bother me one bit.
And yes, we bought my dad a Savage for Christmas on year. It never seen the following deer season. His old Remington 760 out shot it hands down.
The following year he had an HS-Precision reworked 700 with their barrel and stock.
I don’t dispute that their are some good shooting Savages out there. What I find funny is that everyone telling me how great they are usually recite some magazine article they read or tell me about the one their buddy owns.

So what’s up with the 180gr Bergers ??? That’s a lot of bullet for the Ackly !!!

I know, The F-classers are doing the 180 in the .284 Win and .284 Shehane the results are incredible. The retained energy and velocity of this cartridge are phenomenal. I also shoot in tactical matches where you estimate the range to a target of known size at an unkown distance. Put in the Dope and shoot only one try per target. the ranges are anywhere from 100 yrds to 600 around here but in other places they go to 1000 and beyond, it's a hoot. If you like formulating tables the b.c. is .659+ and I like long actions and I found these dies to the .280 Ack. whose volumetric capacity exceeds the .284 Win. With a magazine box longer than 3.5" you don't give up any room either because the corner of the boatail just comes to the neck-shoulder junction. if I can get 2800 from the 180's it will still be travelling faster then 2000 fps at 500 yrds and drop less then 40" w a 200 yrd zero. So why would I want to go any faster?, recoil? barrel life? oh yeah energy will exceed 1800 ftlbs at 500 also. This cartridge will let the bullet do the work instead of the powder.

With your reference to the “bean field” and not wanting to go “tactical” I was in the hunting rig frame of mind!!!

Looking at it from an F-class point a view changes things a little.
Getting 2800 should be obtainable from a 28 inch tube. Nosler list their 175’s just over that with a 26.

The gun I was considering building was going to be a long range target/plate dinger.
(Surgeon action in a McMillan A-5 stock chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua)
I like what I’ve been reading about with some of the smaller cartridges pushing the heavier long range bullets. It’s amazing what guys are doing with the 6BR at 600 yards.

Even the the old .243 is getting a make over with the quick twists and 100g+ bullets in vld's, but yeah I'm thinking beanfield, But I'm borrowing heavily on the research and experimentation with long bullets in the 7's done by the "f" classers. by the way I think we found some common ground here as I highly agree with your choice in mcmillians, my f.n. p.b.r. 20" is in a mcmillian and its the bomb for tactical. The a-3-5 was a perfect fit for that stuff. without being as heavy as the original a's. All of those 6.5's get my attention too, and it's probably just a matter of time.

I have read where those Berger bullets have turned out to be pretty good big game bullets. I’m not convinced yet, but I’d like to hear some field reports from some trusted sources.

I’ve got a 6mm Remington that I wanted to do some experimenting with this summer.
The plan is to try out some of those 85 grain and up bullets the 6BR guys have been using in long range work.
By the way it’s not a 700..........................It’s a 40X Laughing

I also like the HS-Precision tactical stocks but unless your building to factory specs forget it!!! They don’t even want to discuss the matter.

Yeah, what twist is your 6, I'd use the heaviest one I could get away with. The Berger site has all the recommended twist rates next to their bullets. On stocks there is a Manners company within a 3 hr drive K.c.. They have a good rep with the tactical crowd so they probably build a good one. I have experience with the folks at Mc Millan so I'll probably go that way. A 6-284 got a group under 4" at our local 600 range yesterday. He was using 115's. that was pretty cool to watch. We've been having 60 degree days w low winds lately so its hard for me to sit here. I don't know if I'll have mine done intime to field it this year or not. It'll be close I got the confirmation on the Hart 5-6wks but McMillans always go long. I waited 4 months before on them, but I've never been disappointed in the least bit once it was in my hands. And I still haven't made up my mind on which one I want. I think for the colors I get a light brown or dark tan and get aome dk grey marble in it to go withe aluminum oxide blasted stainless.

I'll test those 180's on our little deer we got around here as soon as I can. Maybe even line up on a end to end from the front, we call them dicky shots around here for the white throat patch and the scarfs. I've noticed if you say that in the wrong crowd without that intro you get some funny looks. i.e. "I took him with a dicky shot".
