We went to Mifflin Co Pa yesterday to the Mifflin Co Sportsmens association they have a 1000 yard range there. Very nice range and great people that maintain it Very Happy . This was my first experience at long range shooting Very Happy . We had 12" steel plates from 100 to 500 yds. 18" plate at 600 and 32" silhouettes from 700 to 1000. We took a grill and made a day of it Very Happy . I didn't have a chart for clicks so I used the hold over method I hit targets out to 700 yards Very Happy and after that I was out of mil dots and covering the target with the bottom of the cross hair. A few of the guys had calibrated scopes and were hittin the 1000 yarder. I had just as much fun spottin as I did shootin it's verry cool to watch the vapor trail and see the bullet hit the target at long range. I had a great time and can't wait to go back. I need to get a balistic sheet with clicks I think I could have got past 700 that way.

Joe

Nice range matey - the only time I have a chance to shoot 1,00yds is when I'm on your side of the Pond; either at Raton or out where we hunt.
20 MOA bases are pretty much essential at those distances.

What cartridge were you using?

You are right Gelan....a beautiful looking range. I was looking for the roos grazing on the green mate.

Love to visit it myself.

Joe...would Point Blank give you bullet drop info at 1000 yards? Might give you a start point for clangin' them 1000 yd big boys mate.

Cheers, Vince

Joe, get one of those 20 MOA bases English Mike referenced !!!
If not available for your 788 you can also use shims to get the additional elevation.

Nice looking range! I bet that red truck is not really a target huh?

Next time you are spotting bullet wakes have someone shoot a 55gr.223 from an AR15 and watch what happens about 300 yards down range Shocked They start to corkscrew! I see this in highpower when a new shooter brings a box of 55's to a long range stage of a match. The guys using 75's or heavier have a nice arc bullet wake but the light bullets start to de stabilize and you can see it in their wakes. By 600 you can still hold the black (36") with a 55 but you will not be getting a lot of x's.

Come ups are pretty standard for a class of bullet by velocity. My come ups from 200 yard zero to 600 yards is about 14 MOA for the 75gr 223 @2700fps. It is the same come up for a 168gr SMK from my 30-06 at 2650 fps. These bullets have about the same BC too.(0.440 and 0.475)

800 yards is 25 moa come up from 200, 1000 yards is 38 moa come up from 200. This will get you on the 32" target anyway and you can fine tune from there.

I have a Nikon Buckmaster on my 30-06 and it has 50 moa of elevation. I shimmed the scope so the zero is near the bottom to have enough for 800-1000 yard come ups.

Cheers, Vince

I used point blank for my bullet drop calculations bit it doesn't give the amount of clicks . I can reset my turrets to 0 so I want a sheet to give me how many clicks to come up for the various yardages Very Happy

Dallan has promised come up clicks will be in the next Rev of point blank. in the mean time.... use this calculator. It will give you come up clicks from your scopes zero range. Biggame info calculator

I will upload a picture of one of my stock charts I made for XTC Higpower shooting from the results of this calulator in a minute.

This is the chart I keep taped on the butt stock of my AR or in my score book for Highpower matches. We shoot at 200,300 and 600 yards with iron sights. Notice the Muzzle is -2.4" for the height of the AR iron sights. The calculator asks you how many clicks per MOA your scope or sight uses. I have 1/4 moa clicks on these sights so I entered 4. my Nikon has 1/8 moa clicks so i use 8 for that one. Entering the usual ballistic info such as bullet diameter, bullet weight, BC Muzzle velocity temperature altitude scope height above bore etc. it spits out a table like this one. I took that table to Excel and made it custom for my needs.

As you can see - I start with the 200 yard zero. That is 10 clicks up from mechanical bottom of the sights. to shoot at 100 yards I drop 6 clicks, to go to 300 I add 10 clicks. When I go to 600 I generally will run it back down to mechanical bottom and count up 65 clicks to be sure I know where I am. The calculator goes to 1000 yards but since I will only be shooting the AR to 600 I cut it off here.

Or.... since you know your drops from your scope zero using Point Blank, you can get real close(on paper) by dividing the number of inches of drop by the number of hundred yards to target to get MOA. - referencing the chart above...

50" of drop at 5 hundred yards = 50/5 or 10 moa times the number of clicks per moa on your scope (4) equal come ups. In this case I would have used 40 clicks.

Looking at the stock chart from the calculator its says I should use 38 clicks. This would be two clicks or 1/2 moa difference, at 500 yards that is 2.5" You cannot hold the cross hairs that still...

For 600 yards that would be 86"/6 X 4=57 clicks - Calculator says 55 clicks. Still close enough for casual work on steel gongs.

shrpshtrjoe,
One of my buddies goes to the same range on a regular basis. He uses a 7mm Remington Magnum and does very well. Now that is shooting. All the best...
