I thought I would start a thread on Ar's where members can compare notes on sights, accessories etc anything related to the AR.
I just set my sights up for the Improved battle sight zero. With a 200 meter zero. I set it up to bottom out at 4 clicks under 6/3 I will sight it in adjusting the front sight at 50 yards and then it should be on at 200 meters ( from what I have read ) and then use the dial marks from 300 on out. Hopefully this weekend I can get it sighted in and shoot to a 100 yards and see how it does. Were planning on going back to Pa (1000yd range) in sep and I can see what it does at longer ranges. How do you guys have your sights set up Very Happy

Joe

Joe, can't help you! With my eyes I have to use a scope! My current AR doesn't even have back-up iron sights. However it has become primarily a varmint rifle, at 10.25 pounds. My next AR will be a carbine with BUIS but I'll still rely on some sort of optic sight. Odds are it will be the new Ruger SR-556, when the wallet allows.

By the way, Burris is making a good scope mount for ARs, the AR-P.E.P.R. I bought two, one for me and one for a friend. I have a Bushnell Elite 1.5-to-6X w/ Firefly reticle on mine and he has the Millett DMS 1-to-4X w/ red dot on his.

I have a Colt A2 with a Leupold 2-7 mounted on carry handle. I use the large apeture zeroed for 150 yards and have the scope zeroed for 250 yards. I never spent much time actually using the sights as they were designed, just keeping it simple. The high mounted scope works great in wintertime here in Alaska, when all bundled up the scope is the right height for a good "hood weld" without removing all winter clothing.

Since you mention the 6/3 I assume it is an A4 type with removable carry handle as the standard A2 sights have 8/3 mark on them.

Is it a 16 inch barrel or an 20"? About 200 fps difference. not a big deal under 250- 300 yards but after that it matters.

On the sights... I assume again they are standard issue 1 MOA/click elevation and 1/2 moa/click windage.

IMHO - I always use the long range sight. Its aperture is plenty big enough to let in light and get target acquisition for combat type shooting but being a hair smaller than the near range aperture you get better grouping since your eye centers up better in the smaller hole. I use a hooded .038" aperture on my match grade service rifle.

To get the correct zero... I always run the windage full left then count clicks to full right, divide by two and go back left to that point. It is not always where the reference mark is on the sight base. When I get a no wind zero on the rifle I make a witness mark in the sight and the frame to be able to go back there at any time.

For a stock 20'' A2 , I set the elevation wheel one click over the 3 and adjust the front sight and windage to get point of aim hits at 25 yards. I then drop the click back to 3 and am pretty close for the numbers on the wheel with 55 FMJ running about 3100 fps. You have to shoot at distance to know what the real settings are. They may be a click or two off of the number depending on what load you are using.

For a hunting zero - I set it for +1.3" at 100 yards and am 3" point blank out to almost 250 yards.

For my match gun- I run the rear sight down to bottom and come up 3 moa (12 clicks on my gun) so that if I ever want to shoot at 100 yards I can. I adjust the front sight to get hits at 200 yards in the center of the SR target with a 6 o'clock hold. I am using a 75 Hornady HPBT at 2650 fps and the come ups for different distances are 3 moa to 300 yards and 11 more (14 from 200, 17 up from the bottom) moa to 600 yards. I use the 75 A max at 600 so my actual clicks up from the bottom are right about 60 clicks up.

On a standard sights, if you get up real high in elevation you see the rear sight base start to cock sideways a little bit. I have the sights of my match gun staked to keep them perpendicular to the bore all the way up.

I use auto touch up paint to mark the no-wind zero on the windage knob by painting spots the dial and the frame.

The 200 yard zero mark get a stripe on the elevation wheel too since my matches all start at 200 yards then move back to 300 and 600.

Have fun with it. The AR is one of the easiest guns in the world to shoot well.

What do you AR shooters think of the "tactical charging handle latch"? Just curious because I put a Badger on mine to help get around the scope.

I have seen them advertised but haven't seen one on a rife yet. It seems like a good idea though.

I got my first AR last weekend, a S&W M&P15 flat-top. Very nice and I already have a great appreciation for the AR design - a significant advancement over the M1/M14. I'm not sure what scope I will ultimately use on it so I set-up my old Weaver 1.5x that I got in 1969 to hunt squirrels with my .22. Its got lots of eye relieve so its way forward of the charge handle. Finding rings have been a problem. Guy at the local gunshop told me to get the rings as low as I could get the scope (I didn't take his recommendation or believe him). I ended up getting Weaver see-thru's which get the scope's center up about 1.25 inches. I think 1.5 inches would be better but at least I can have fun shooting the gun.

Any suggestions on scope rings that mount direct to the flat-top that are tall enough but don't cost over $100.

Slim there is another thread here about the Burris PEPR scope mount for the ARs. I like mine.

As for a scope, I'm using a Bushnell Elite 4200, 1.5-to-6X with the "Firefly" reticle. I intended this rifle to be a short range varmint gun, with a secondary use of home defense.

My AR-10 went away at last show, but my sights were as follows. I used a Springfield Armory scope with set reticle, matching the trajectory of the Federal 168gr HPBT Match ammo (about 2,500 fps) for the 308 upper. The 260 Medisha upper sported a Hakko MPZ (Military & Police) 4x16x56 tactical mill dot scope. Both scopes were mounted on Warne QD extra high rings. I have used Warne rings for many years and have had good luck with them. Warne bases and rings are rugged and very, very stable.

I now have a stainless Mini-14. Very Happy
Best,
Ed

Thanks Dawgdad! I just ordered some as I really need the the scope centerline to be 1.5" above the flat-top. They were $45 (about $20 each). but looks like a solid solution without having to step up to Warne.
