Mike:

Not sure the whole story, my buddy e-mailed it to me and I am not sure where he got the info - I am thinking that this hunter did not have very good buddies - if he is an out of state hunter I would think he would be required to have a guide, or maybe at least hunting with some buddies - somebody should have figured out his misunderstanding and called him off the shot.....I wonder if Llama tastes like spotted owl?

I remember seeing a story from KY a few years ago where a guy killed one of the newly reintroduced elk, thinking it was a whitetail... Anybody ever heard the term "Target ID"?

I know where we live in NW Colorado, there are actually signs and also a big pictoral spread in the Big Game guide to help one identify the difference between an elk and a moose - I guess we will need to addLlama to the page.

Actually had the chance to see one ranchers method of protection for his cattle that were similar in color to deer by taking whitewash and a wide paintbrush and writing the word C O W on them in big letters . I was laughing my butt off until I spoke to one of the old locals who told me how many head the old rancher had lost over appx 25 years. I have seen 2 big Mulies tagged during elk season but nothing quite like that Llama . Shocked

Very Happy This is kindof like the old story of the old woman hunter on her first mule deer hunt.....She shot one and when she went up to tag it she got into a confrontation with somebody that made it to the animal before her,so she challenged the "guy " with her rifle. Finally he relinquished the animal to her with the stipulation that he could get his saddle and bridle off of it before she tagged and dressed it!.......................This probably has happened somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf Shocked

Years ago in Oregon a State Trooper stopped an out of state vehicle with a mule tied to the front fender (when cars had front fenders). The out of state hunter was real proud of his "cow elk" and showed it off to the Trooper. The trooper shook his head, got back in his car and drove off...

The first year I hunted in the US some twit shot an outfitter's horse in our GMU.
Someone told me that driving a two tone brown & cream station wagon with roof bars wasn't a good idea during elk season either.

IDIOTS are EVERYWHERE . . . . .
I have two similar (unfortunately true) stories from places I have lived.

1) In Randolph Center, VT an out-of-state deer hunter was at a weigh-in station trying to figure out how to hook up the mule he had shot onto the hanging scale.

2) In Solomons, MD a New York goose hunter pulled into a gas station and was bragging to the attendant that he had limited out on geese. Since nobody had bagged many geese on the Chesapeake for quite some time, the attendant was very impressed - until the hunter opened his trunk to show off a pile of seagulls. He just congratulated the guy and sent him on his way.
Wonder how they tasted.
