So if I swap uppers for an optics ready half, would you go flat top; or one of the elevated optic platforms that allow use of standard high rings?

I don't believe you loose any rigidity by going with a standard flat top. Many of the extra high rings are very strong (page 2 of this topic). I'm shooting 1" groups at 250 yards with consistent POI. Even with the very inexpensive rings, I've shot 100s of rounds in fast shooting competitions with no loose screws of change of POI. If you go for the elevated optics platforms to use standard rings, you loose the option/benefit of all the AR specific scopes and back-up sights. Plus I haven't seen many standard scopes that can fit on an AR without some sort of extention forward (bottom of page 2). Now that I say that, I haven't seen and AR with an elevated optics platform as an integral part of the AR upper except in on-line catalogs. I've never seen one at the range.

The other thing that nags my thoughts is the 6-223 is it worth it or would a tight twist 223 upper get you the same thing from a heavier .223 bullet, maybe a vld?

I assume 6-223 is a 1:6 twist (<1:7) needed to stabilize 90gr VLD bullets. I have no experience with this set-up but have listened to others who have. First, bullets heavier than 80gr are too long to fit in the AR magazine thus 90gr must be fired single-shot. I also have heard that getting the 90gr to stabilize is not always a sure thing.

Well I finally got moving on my 2nd AR. At the end of last year I bought a lower receiver and parts but have been debating and waffling on which upper to get and in which cartridge. I was going for a wildcat like a 6.5mmBRX or 6mmDTI (6.8 SPC necked down with blown out shoulder). Finally just got tired of it all and went for a 24-inch Varmint Upper from Rock River. Should be here in a week or two. Meanwhile I assembled my lower. I still have to get anti-rotation pins for the trigger group so haven't installed them yet. I may go for an aftermarket single-stage trigger but don't need it right away.

I removed the spur from the hammer today to reduce lock time on my new build. A hacksaw didn't scratch the surface. Had to use a high-speed abrasive wheel. I'm not going remove the spur on my S&W M&P because I plan to shoot military ammo through it and may need the extra mass to initiate the mil primers. Also added KNS 2nd Gen anti-rotation pins. Almost everyone tells me I don't need them. However, I've seen what rotating pins can do to a steel receiver with my old rolling block. I don't want any wear on my AR lower receiver.

I have bin changing around my AR Lately. I got rid of my Colt in the Fall to get my 4 wheeler Sad and have missed not having a carbine So I sold my RRA upper and just bought a Spikes Tactical M4LE upper with a 1/7 twist Very Happy . The 1/7 should do just fine with the 62grn or 70 grn TSX for deer. I should get the best of both worlds with this set up. I mounted a 2-7 Leupold on the PEPR mount and I think I'm going to buy a Burris fast fire 11 reflex sight and mount it on the picatinny ring top. . I will have a close range tactical sight and a long range sight without changing anything.. I will post some pics in a bit..

shrpshtrjoe, how do you like that foregrip? Are you using it in only tactical matches or while hunting, too?
