Dont have any experieance with RRA Varmint uppers. But I do have a Bushmaster "Varminter" and it shoots .250" @ 100 yds with 40gr Hornady Vmax bullets under 25.0gr H335.
I also have a few custom built AR uppers I did my self. One has unturned Kreiger barrel blank I turned down and installed reciever extension and put together with Bushmaster upper and it shoots very, very well.
Also, you may want to consider a Chip McCormick or other manufacturer drop in trigger system. they are VERY good and its just a drop in deal, no complicated adjustments, drilling & tapping......ect,ect.
AS always, Have fun!

shrpshtrjoe, just wanted to see how your RRA is doing. I'm getting tired of trying to figure out what cartridge I want for my next upper and may just go with .223 with 1:8 twist for now. I can afford to buy it and shoot it. I'm going to go with the 24-inch barrel and get some reach with it.

It's shooting what ever I load for it even the TSX's Laughing 62 grn and 70 grn the best powders so far have bin Varget and H4895 has done better with the 69 grn Nosler bthp. Varget for the 70 grn TSX and im still workin on the XBR I haven't bin to the range lately gettin stands ready for deer. I don't think you will be unhappy with a RRA upper. It hasn't bin a issue to get it to shoot sub MOA

Maybe I'll be lucky enough to get 1/2 MOA or less. Likely to pull the trigger tonight. If 24" barrel is too heavy or long, I can always shorten or flute. I want to shoot 500-600 yards with it.

Guess I should have said "my project". With you looking into the necked-up .223 to .25 (.257 Ugalde), I was getting interested in the 6mmBRX and 6mm White Oak (6.8 necked-down). The expense for the barrel was getting pretty high and all the work arounds I would have to do on ammo, I just decided to get this RRA .223 and put-off getting an upper in one of these more powerful cartridges until later. Maybe by then, I'll decide on the .458 SOCOM!

I have a .223 WOA varmint upper with a 20" 1:7 barrel that holds 80 SMK's and 75 and 80 Amax MOA out to 600.

I was looking through the bullet selection last night. Decided to start with Hornady's 75gr A-Max. With a BC of 4.35 and some Varget powder, I should be able to get close to 3000 fps. I was also thinking that if they barrel turns out to be a shooter, I could have it rechambered for the .223 WOA to get additional range if I need it. What magazines are you using? I've heard there are some metal ones that give you an extra 0.1" COL.

I do not load them to magazine length. .015" off the lands single loaded.

WOA .223 is a Wylde chamber.

GRRR - I just wrote about a two page reply and it got sent to the ether when I went to preview!!!

I will try again...

I am hesitant to tell you any OAL for these loads. I set these bullets for my chamber using the Hornady OAL gauge (formerly StonePoint) that determines the distance from the bolt face to the rifling. I measure the loaded rounds from the case head to the ogive. Ogive is the point on the bullet where it first reaches bore diameter. If you have a short chamber and you use my lengths you may get high pressure signs or if you have to unload a long round you risk lodging the bullet in the bore and dumping 24 grains of powder in your lower. Shocked If it is a long cut chamber you accuracy wil not be any good if you are jumping it too far.

I have found that these bullets work best in my gun with .015" or less jump. The sweet spot is about .005" wide at the most. and it goes quickly to a $h!t spot if you are not jumping the right amount.

OAL from case head to bullet tip is not a good way to measure these loads.(or any load for that matter) Even with these top quality match bullets you find that from the base of the bullet to the tip will vary up to .012". Measure the same bullets from base to ogive and you will see about 0.001". This is due to the way the bullets are drawn inthe punches during manufacturing.
This is also why sometimes people think their seater die is messed up because it cannot hold an OAL under .010". Quality seater stems do not seat on the tip but have an opening that is close to the ogive. Most manufacturers will custom profile a stem for you if you send them the bullet you want to use too.

John Holliger talks about 80 SMK's in his reloading page on his site. He controls his chambers closely enough to give some OAL advice.
