My concern with a bullet the fragments in the game, like deer, is the amount of meat that can wasted. Then there is a chance of finding lead bits in meat that you did get.

A properly sized and placed B-Tip will not exit and all damage will be confined inside the ribs or thoracic cavity !!!

That doesn't sound like a sure thing. The round could be too big for the size deer you shot at or your shot could be off a bit.
Also, I've read reports from other hunters that Nosler B-tips can sometimes not penetrate if they hit the shoulder.

And they would be 100% correct.........B-Tips were not designed to be a shoulder busters !!!
Once again it's a situation in which hunters used a particular bullet without any knowledge or regard as to how it should be used. .........then badmouth and complain about how bad they are.
As for a sure thing........I've never lost a deer with a B-Tip.
Properly sized isn't a function of caliber or weight of a bullet (that's why I didn't reference anything in particular) but more of an energy issue.
A equation similar to what Paul and pumpkin was talking about in another thread could be a good tool for this.
IMO they are at their best when used in standard non-magnum calibers, short actions are even better but if you prefer long action stay with the lighter for caliber bullets. Once you get past 250-300 yards where impact velocities have declined is where you'll find a better niche for heavier bullets and magnum cartridges.
B-Tips will expand well under 2,000fps......don't be afraid to use them at those extended ranges........just use them they way they were intended to be used !!!

I agree btips work but i also have firsthand penetration experience w the .277 130g.'s they work i agree but they are still more penetration then needed for whitetail and they will bust a shoulder. at standard .270 win velocity and @75-100yrds

I could bust shoulder with the 165's out of the 06 but I never had one go right down.......always wanted to run about 30 yards first !!!
