I've worked up two solutions to relieve my frustration in this matter. I modified my gas block to turn off the gas so that I operate the AR as a straight-pull bolt action. When I run it semi-auto, I use a grass catcher (no I didn't mis-type brass) from my old lawn mower held up by plastic pipe to "snag" the brass as it comes flying out.

Check out this link to MidwayUSA...

Brass Catchers

There are a number of brass catchers on the market that will catch your brass for you. Had a mate in Sydney who put one on his Walther semi auto pistol to stop him loosing his .32 cases and it worked a treat. He also cut the bottom out of it so the brass would drop at his feet instead of becoming a dead weight off the side of his pistol.

Cheers, Vince

There's another story in there that caght me off guard.

"Military Marksmanship" The header said it all, pretty alarming. And, this is no way a knock at the boots on the ground (God bless and keep them SAFE, please!) but how in the hell did the Army big heads decide to drop long range riflery from the program? Esp in the freakin' mountains? Yeh, I know it was foreverago...

Pop's started me early in riflery. (avatar) Never let me near a HG untill I was proficient with a rifle (took years). It was always about the rifle and marksmanship. Most I know are the same too, and you? I love riflery. Way more than HG stuff. I never grow tired of shooting long guns either. Maybe that's what caught me so off guard- guess I took this teaching for granted?

But good greif this was a very interesting article and I was oblvious to the situation in general.

I say give our boys and girls on the ground EVERYTHING they need- including such an essential and vital skill! Good night, this story kinda freaked me out, I had no clue, Krikee! Train our guys for the task at hand...the enemey is!

I have been hearing about this from the shooting teams at rifle matches for some time and i had a friend in the national guard deploy with exactly 10 rounds fired at 25 yards after a very weak boot camp experience.

I have my son shooting with me in both rifle and pistol competition and we have even done some three gun training and matches. I hope this give him a leg up when the USMC has a hold of him. Thank God the Marines still believe every soldier a rifle man first and use a lot more live fire training than the other branches.

Good thoughts DD, and, bless ya for giving him a head start. I'm really glad pops got me into it early. I can put it down for years then pick it up again pretty quick, sans issues from vision degridation. But, SAFETY, hold over-under, lead, wind, mirage, all that and just plain ol' educated guesstimating at times were pretty vaulable tools to him, so he passed them on. As did you.

Well done DD...as Stovey says mate...a good head start.

It isn't a lot different in the Aussie Army...I don't believe that soldiers do anywhere near enough live fire training. All they need is some range time and a few different scenarios involving attacks and defence to become familiar with their weapon.

Sending soldiers into a war zone with only 10 rounds fired at 25 yards is akin to sending them on a suicide mission at best, and condemning them to possible death at worst.

Cheers, Vince
