ak-47 whats your thoughts ?

I just got a ak-47 .

to be honest , I would of never even thought of getting one of these guns.

but it was sitting there in this store. and the price was not too bad. and after talking to my brother that works with a few ak-47 fans. I ended up going back and bought it.

ok. its not the best looking gun, and its probley one of the roughest looking guns around. it came with the leather strapp, the old ancient looking round oil can. and cleaning rod with the little tube with cleaning tips that will fit in the but stock of the gun.

Quote::
The AK-47 model WASR has all the features that you want from your AK-47. It features a pistol grip, and the ability to accept all high capacity magazines including stick and drum mags. This is the Romanian AK47 rifle, not the Russian AK-47 rifle.

the one I got did not come with the Bayonet , guess they replaced it with the rusty old round oil can that had no oil in it. lol.

the guy at the gun store said they do not supply the Bayonet anymore with these guns. but I found a sight on line that shows one with it and shipping is free.

whats your oppinion of these types of guns. I would like to hear the pro and conns.

I am a little bumb out. I was saving up for a spring field 308 socom II.
maybe next year I can get the springfield.

Ripper,

If you wanted to use it for hunting its roughly comparable to the 30-30 so if its accurate enough it might make a good "bush gun" for stalking deer in dense forested areas with a 5 round magazine (as law allows). Smile

its not equal to a 30 30 its about like a 223. very good shooters but lousey deer killers.

i bought one and scoped it. the 1st deer i shot was at 30 yards. i had a clean heart shot. the deer ran off and was found 4 days later 3 miles away from where i shot it with no blood trail what so ever.

aks are like m16s they shoot terriffic but are not designed to actually kill anything. they are designed to wound {war combat}

for like yotes or targets they are great for deer they suck.

i was using 125 grain softpoints. aks just dont have the knockdown needed. {yes deer have been killed with them butt they arent really up to the job}{this was the first deer i had get away in over 20 years of huntingand since i got rid of it no more have ever ran off}

Spacedone,

I dont have any experiance with the AK-47 they are prohibited here so you cant buy them (not that I would have anyways not my type of rifle). Smile Just going by Remingtons site listing 1180ft-lb at 100 yards 882ft-lb at 200yards for the Russian Round in 125gr and 1296ft-lb at 100 yards and 858ft-lb at 200 yards with a 30-30 with a 150gr bullet. As for the 170gr the 30-30 wins by quite abit. Smile

Mind you the balistics for them are with a 24" barrel and the AK has a 16" or so barrel. Confused

Pros: one of the "must have" militaria items. This historical rifle has had huge impact that will continue into the foreseeable future. It is very inexpensive to manufacture, ultra reliable under adverse conditions, easy to field strip and maintain. Often, they can be had at very reasonable prices, depending on origin. Ammo is usually plentiful and cheap.

Cons: while they may be fun to shoot, more AK 47 casing lie on the desert floor than any other caliber. Because of that, many public areas now forbid shooting. Because they are inexpensive to own and shoot, many are bought for the sole purpose of blasting away without regard to the target or the consequences. By association, many of the owners are tainted with the onus of being reckless and/or careless.

The rifle is a marvel of simplicity but quality varies from various manufacturers.

I had to edit my post above,

I ment to say that this gun is not the best looking gun. it does have a fairly rough action, but read that it will loosen up after a while.
also read that its a very reliable gun under extream conditions. just like hand loader said.

this is realy not my kind of gun to have or own. and I realy would not of bought it if was not so well known for its historical back ground. more like a collectors item, just to have and go plinking with.

I have not shot it yet. and probly will not get a change to shoot it till next week maybe. I hope that it will shoot fairly straight and accurate. if it does this, I will be some what happier about buying it.
I have already asked the gun smith to order a 5 round clip for it. I realy dont like the 30 rounds they come with. but it does look neat.

I was looking in the reloading data books and was trying to choose between the 30-30 and the 223 to compare this gun too, before I bought it.
its almost comes close to comparison , but just had to settle that it is a gun of its own class. and will have to go test shoot it to see how it does compare to a 30-30 or a 223.

There is a big difference in price between an AK and a Socom! take the difference and buy some ammo and shoot that thing. you will love it. I have owned AK's and SKS's in the 7.62x39 and they are fun plinkers and effective coyote guns out to about 200 yards max. I usually make sure they are under 150 yards to be sure. I zero the rifle for 150 yards, about 1.5" up at 100 yards. down 3 at 200. Accuracy will vary a bit from gun to gun but 2 moa is about as good as I can shoot one with the stock sights. these guns are super reliable. I kept mine in a truck tool box or behind the seat of the pick up. Through dirt, mud and untold bumps and bangs, it never failed to go bang when I pulled the trigger.(Which was long and heavy BTW)I hunted in Wisconsn with a guy who killed a spike buck with an SKS with the 125sp. Shot placement was good so it went down cleanly.

I have a Norinco SKS though that shoots 1moa and I have kept that one with a red dot on it for low light close quarters yote bustin' Very Happy

Enjoy the ugly rifle, just like fat chicks, they need lovin too....

Ripper007,

I own an SKS, AK47 and an AR15. The AK47 and SKS are fine weapons that feed and shoot reliably. They have much more knock down force then the AR15, since they shoot a .30 caliber round vs the AR15's .223 round. My AK and SKS have been with me for years and I would not hesitate to hunt with them and I still take them to the range without any nasty looks or trouble from other people. Ammo is still reasonably cheap and plentiful, so hone your aim and if it is legal to hunt with a semi in your part of the world, GO FOR IT.

The AK and SKS are both quite good for a military application or defense work. They go bang just about 100% when the trigger is pulled. I have owned an AK or two and always found the trigger to be a real pain, the setup allows the trigger to be pulled, and pulled and pulled and then bang.

If you get an AK that shoots 4 inches at 100, that is normal, under 4 inches is great. There is a reason that you never see a scope on an AK for a sniper rifle, in films, the soviet countries all used the Mosin as a sniper rifle or the Draganov. In Vietnam you never saw a Draganov, only the MN.

My last AK in 223 would hold under 2 inches at 100 and was considered very accurate by most AK fans.

The M16 and AK were designed as military rifles, a lot of folks have died at the business end of both guns. The 16 wins the accuracy contest hands down. Course, the Russians copied the MP-44 design for the AK. Had the Germans not lost the war, you would be buying the MP-44 now rather than AKs. The Russians deny the copy, but, in fact, documents show they captured the MP-44 months befor the AK was developed.

Were I to even think about hunting the AK, which I never have done, it would be with reloads using hunting bullets and heavy loads. The FMJ stuff is just not kosher.

I regard the AK like a 30 carbine, interesting toy to play with, but not for hunting.

Ripper007,

Cheaperthandirt.com has the same ammo for $3.77 a box. If you are looking to stock up, that is not a bad price.

I have both AK-47 and SKS, like the posts above they go bang!! and ammo is cheap.....my SKS has the front sight cut off and re-crowned, and it shoots groups that avg 1.5 inch, with a scope, The a scope is mounted using a side mount, not the cheap loose fiting top mount....My AK shoots groups in the 3-4inch range open sights at 100 yards, however most beer/soda cans are easy targets at 50 -75 yards. I would hunt deer with either, but limit to 100 yards or less, not because of lack of power, but because you need to hit them where you aim......For deer hunting, there are a lot better guns for the same or less money then what AK's bring for $$$$....back years ago you could buy SKS's for under $100 bucks, and I told everyone I knew, you should buy one, there a blast and worth every penny, but everyone I know who still has one, takes it out a couple times a year shoot's 10 box's of shell in sitting, has a blast for the day, then puts it away till next year.......basically the gun sits alot, you can have just as much fun or more with a 1022
