We call 'em secateurs too but use 'em on roses rather than rabbits.

Secateurs=scissors...Scissors has less letters. If you were really "laz" you would have used "scissors". There goes the "laz" part of it.

Ok it's been a long winter, now we're talkin scissors....at least Gelan is out there rustle'n up some grub for us (you are sharing, aren't you?) Must be nice down there enjoyin the warm sunny days, kickin back shootin tohbi (rabbits). Nice you got head shots on them too. What were you shooting with? Oh that was a really great video Gelan! Love the leg chopping and the easy skinning method, makes it look easy, like mom cuttin up a chicken, you just get in there and whooosh it's done. None of that whispy fur flyin around either. Good Job! Wrap one of those on the stick and prop it up next to the fire. Throw some soy sauce on there once in a while and you got brown salty perfection. I would love one thrown in the smoker too. MMmmmmm I'm getting slathered up just thinkin about it.

You are right Suz...a very easy skinning method. A quick "slot" on the back (big enough for two fingers on each hand) then pull...takes about 5 seconds.

Unfortunate part about it is the skin isn't any good to keep doing it this way. If you want to keep the skin, then you will need to start on the back legs, run a cut around the knee then down the inside of each leg to meet at the pizzle. Once you have pulled the skin off each leg it will come off the rest of the rabbit as a "tube". When you reach the head it's a simple matter of running the knife around the neck to separate it from the rest of the skin. The skin will just pull off the front legs, usually separating at the knees. Then it's just a matter of cutting the legs and head off as shown in Gelan's vid...eezy peezy

haha, been processing rabbits all the years, but I never yet bothered with their skin. Its way too fragile for any use IMHO.

Well the ole Indians used to make childrens blankets, coats and stuff out of rabbit fur, it just depends on how you process it, but I can imagine it would be hard to handle such thin skinned pelts. I'll have to see how they did it, I might know somebody I can ask.

Ok just for your amusement I found an article on the web about making a rabbit skin robe/blanket;

The method for preparing the rabbit skins was time consuming, but it was used with only minor changes by all American Indians. After skinning the rabbit, the inside of the pelt was carefully cleaned, due to the thin skin, this was fairly difficult. Then after cleaning, the pelt was cut in a spiral pattern, making a single long strip of fur approximately half an inch to an inch thick. This strip of fur was partially dried to remove some of the moisture, and then using tule grass, cedar bark, cat tails or other fibres, the fur was twisted around the fibre into a large and long cord. These rabbit fur and fibre cords were dried further allowing the fur to shrink around the plant fibre binding the two together.

After the right number of pelts had been twisted into cords, a half loom was set up to weave the cords together. Depending on the tribe, who it was for and the weather conditions this weave was done in various ways, the most common being the cross weave or over and under weave. The simplicity of this weave made it practical and easy to complete. The other common weave was the checkerboard weave, which involved putting two strands of fur over and two strands under. This was more time consuming but was stronger than the cross weave. The cord always acted as the warp of the robe, while plant fibre usually acted as the weft.

Once the robe was completed, usually part of the weft was extended at one end, allowing the robe to be tied around the wearers neck. If the robe was to act more often as a blanket it was often just placed over the shoulders and held in place by hand. Sometimes seashells such dentalia and abalone, rolled copper beads, bones or European beads were added to the robe for decoration.
