Our Early muzzle loader started today . I haven't bin seeing much in archery except yearlings . Well luck would have a bigger doe showed up this eve.. She gave me a run for my money . She ran about 150 yds through the thickest stuff there was I had to go around it and then couldn't pick up the blood but if I'm one thing I'm persistent found her just before dark.. She's gonna eat just fine Very Happy

Nice one, good job on the recovery. Wish we could take multiple deer, I actually wish they would introduce whitetails here but people are adamant against it. Ah well I'll have to make a trip back east some day.

Whitetails are better eating than muleys, that one looks like fine table fare.

shrpshtrjoe, congrats! great start to your hunting season. Are you going to get back up to one-a-day like you did a couple of years ago?

Thanks guys Very Happy .. When she got out of site I heard her crash so I thought I new exactly were we was and when I got around the thick stuff and she wasn't there I was surprised ( I hate that sick feeling I get when I think I'm gonna loose one I hate loosing a animal ) it was starting to get dark, and then I couldn't find the blood trail again so I started to check the trails they run and she even went the opposite way I thought she would have but she's in the cooler so I'm happy Very Happy .. I wont get out till next week (doe only) but I should be able to hunt Thurs, fri and sat so hopefully I can get the freezer stocked Very Happy

Great hunt Joe...that is one sweet looking "little lady" mate. Good work on the track down too mate...it's not easy, especially when the light is dropping off as it did.

Do you find that the meat toughens up a bit with the release of adrenaline when they take off and run like that after being hit mate?

I haven't noticed a difference in the meat whether they run or drop but I have heard that before. But I also grind a a lot of my deer so I might not notice it as much..

It was just a thought mate. I remember my Uncle would always pen his sheep for a night prior to them being butchered, and if any of then got overly excited he would leave them till the following day for that very reason.

Good luck with the next phase of your hunt mate...I look forward to more great news buddy.

Vince, I think it's not the adrenaline, I've been told it's the lactic acid that forms in the mussles while running. But normally they mean the running before the shot. Never expected that the last run could influence the meat (exept when they fall into wather or manure or so). How many times do they still run alltough being shot trough the heart? Now to my knowledge, when the pump is broken there is no longer pressure to send the liquids round... so how will that adrenaline get distributed?

And Joe, congrats! Every time I see such a thread I'm getting more and more convinced to try a Hawkin on our roedeer (altough I'm not sure anyone can tell me if it's legal to use that in our country Smile )

Good points Aloys...unless the heart was destroyed by the shot I would imagine that it would still be pumping to some extent...hence the blood trail. Even a deer heart/lung shot will continue to breathe frothy bloody until it drops and dies mate.

But as I said...good points, and it supports my Uncles ideas of keeping his sheep quiet until being butchered for meat.

Man them new ML's are deadly and really open up some new hunting possibilities. Pretty damn impressed with them. The old lock types are cool but these new ones have evolved big time.

I want some sausage!!! *chomp-burp*

These new one's are great stovy . 209 shotgun primers used for ignition work fantastic I have never had a misfire with a 209 primer. New powders are great I use BlackHorn 209. They have came a long way.. I use mine in place of my rifle some times.. You would have a lot of fun with one Very Happy
