My gun cabinet is looking very bare tonight Sad
took my centrefires off to the gunsmiths to be operated on.
thought it was past time to get this done as my hearing is not getting any better as I get older and any bit of protection has got to help preserve what is left.
the recoil reduction will also be very welcome and will make it much easier for the young fella to handle and gain confidence when using the bigger guns.
I picked up a sample pack of "trailboss" 360grains worth to try out some cat sneeze loads in the x39 when she returns.
went out and shot 3 bunnies tonight and thought it about time I cleaned out my .22 sound moderator as Ive used it for 8-9 years and never taken it apart......now Ive always thought it was tight inside as the end washer didnt like to move. very dirty with caked on powder residue, cleaned and put it back together...then read the instructions..thread protector cap is STORED inside moderator!!!!! wtf so thats what the other wee threaded part is thinks I!!! take it apart again and take out threaded ring and sure enough it fits over thread nicely. put moderator back together MINUS thread cap and lo and behold...the bits move much more freely and all washers fit into springs much better than before Embarassed Embarassed
hope it shoots the same, should be quieter Embarassed
funny the gun shop who sold it to me didnt pick that up as there was a 2nd thread protector in box with moderator already fitted to barrel of rifle when we bought it.

Well Elvis t least you get to use moderators. Our idiot government has watched too many spy movies and have declared them a prohibuted item of mass hysteria.
We are led by fools and f*#£wits.

yeap, moderators (silencers) are a plus that we have to sign our life away to obtain here in the US. But in Britian, they want owners or rifles to have and use them. Don't want those gun shots while hunting to concern the public.

I'll never understand such thing. Here is the same: even a silencer for a fire-weapen (arme-de-fue) on its own is not allowed to produce, to own nor to sell or to buy. But on cars, big ventilators, ... one must decrease the sound to protect the environment. On the other hand a silencer is allowed on an airrifle and you also don't need a license to buy a pillow alltough it's often showed in movies that when you shoot trough a pillow...

I've been told that in the Scandinavian countries you have to use a silencer while hunting to prevent your dog becoming deaf and it's very difficult to keep your dog under command when his ears are plugged, because he cannot hear you anymore when you call him.

When to many people sit together not knowing how to kill the time, they often make funny laws just to be fealed important...

I've been considering a suppressor for some time now !!!
About 1/2 the states in the US allow them for hunting but like Slim said we got to ask permission first.

well Im impressed with how well they work. the felt recoil is way less, noise is about the same as a .22mag for full power .270 load.
the .223 sounds like a .22LR
and as for the 7.62x39 using subsonic rounds...quieter than my silenced .22.
Ive been tweeking the 150 grain cast load started a 6 grains TB neat and tried 6.5...still ok get to 6.7 and crack...broke the 1050fps mark so will back it down again.
shot 3 bunnies with wee gun tonight and son got another with the .22 aswell.
wife used to complain shotgun was too loud..now we walk to slow and dog is redundant...time to break out the .12ga again me thinks Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

those in the .270 and .223 ARE supersonic...the x39 also sounds like a mag.22 with full power loads.

Shocked Here in the states that would be $200usd each for silencer/suppressor in tax,and about $1k usd for each unit for good ones-not extravagent ones!Too much money for quiet!

Troubles...you can actually make them yourself if you are fairly handy and have good tools. I remember some years back where a guy out here made one from a length of pipe, ends closed off, one end drilled to the appropriate diameter and a nut welded on the other end. Inside were initially some copper coins drilled and spaced using steel wool. The upgraded version he built had a removable cap on the front for cleaning and dished baffles, again spaced by steel wool. Using it on a .22 rimfire semi auto (that's how long ago it was), all you could hear was the action cycling.

Have a look at YouTube and see some of the things they have tried in the name of noise reduction. (Apparently disposable oil filters aren't too bad.)

Then you could tell all the guys in prison how to make them.
