I was wondering if any of you bench guys would happen to know which particular .224 52 grain bullet has the longest bearing surface. I have some speer HP (1035) that seem pretty long. Does anyone know of any longer. I'm only interested in 52 grainers.

I use those speers they are great. I would hazard a guess that a copper barns bullet would win that title as it should be larger in overall size. If you compare a norma projectile with the likes of a pmc projectile you would swear the pmc was much heavier as they are much bigger I believe this is because they are less dence.

Something in a flat base I guess. I dont know of any sites that list the bearing side of their bullets.

Elvis has a good guess with the Barnes, copper is lighter so they would be longer, but they usually are boat tails which reduces bearing surface.

Yep, Barnes or GS-systems.
And when you want it extremely long: let someone with a CNC-lathe produce some 52 grainers in aluminium...

The question: why do fix that weight on 52 grs? When you want much bearing surface then I expect your barrel has a very fast twist (which it makes it OK for heavier bullets…)

I take it that you are a bench rest target shooter from your comment leanporker?

I think both a Elvis and Aloys have covered it mate. The lighter and less dense the material used to make the bullet, the longer they have to make it for a chosen bullet weight.

I’m with Aloys...why settle on a 52gr bullet? There are plenty of good accurate offerings out there...starting at 34gr (Dogtown) and on upwards to a whopping 90gr offering from Sierra.

I'm shooting the 95gr SMK from Sierra in my 1:6.5 twist 224 Valkyrie (needles)

Hornady has a 55gr GMX that will likely have the longest shank of any .224 caliber bullet in that weight range. A great hunting bullet but probably not your objective.

LOL, looks like someone was bored and looking (digging) for something to do.

Way to go Dallan!

Slim - how are you liking the Valkyrie? What loads are you finding work in your 6.5 twist? I have a Kreiger barrel 224 Valk and have been shooting 88ELD Match, Berger 85.5’s and the SMK 90’s. I have found RE-17 gives decent results but the velocity is not what I have been expecting.

I shot in a match where we shot 200-300-600-1000 yards. I used the Hornady75 BTHP Black at 200-300 and the ELD at 600 and 1000. Shot well enough to win. Before all of this virus madness I was planning on shooting a lot more at 1000 with it. On hold until the matches start up again

Maybe i should have started another thread instead of tacking onto this old one lol
