These are my 12 Best Westerns in no particular order
The Shootist
The Unforgiven
The Magnificent Seven
Shane
The Searchers
The Professionals
High Noon
Lonesome Dove
The Outlaw Josey Whales
Winchester 73
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Dances With Wolves
I do not list any of the spaghetti westerns. They did change the direction of western movies but, great movies, I do not think so. A Fist Full of Dollars just does not compare to Lonesome Dove. My rating is based on how many times I can watch a movie without getting tired of seeing the movie.

The best westerns are the ones without James Stewart in them.

I only numbered them to make myself stop at twelve. Notably, the Duke, Eastwood and Charlie Bronson are the only ones I recognize immediately as having multiple appearances.

The forgotten ones on your lists are those movies that were taken from books written by Louis L'Amour...And one other one..."Quigley Down Under"...I saw Shane (once and I didn't finish it) many years ago and I wouldn't put it in my bird cage....My opinion only...

yeah, I liked the Long Riders and the L'Amour books that were made into movies with Sam Elliot and Tom Selleck were good. Shane riding off into the sunset and the kid not knowing if he lives or dies was what they call a classic Bushy, good enough for ol' Clint to steal for Josey Wales how many years later? Other than that....Jack Palance makes a kickass bad guy, lol. I could probably come up with a list a lot longer than a dozen, but I could come up with a waaaa haaay hayyyy longer list of bad western movies, lol.

There is no wrong answer here, only what you enjoy. Bushy, name your best dozen.
Ed
PS: I thought about Quigley and The Man From Snowy River, I do enjoy both movies. Nothing wrong with picking either one. One that no one has mentioned yet that I also enjoy, Open Range.

Good Western Movies in no perticular order:
1 ) The Searchers
2 ) Rio Bravo
3 ) How the West was Won
4 ) Rio Grande
5 )The Sons of Katie Elder
6 ) Fistfull of Dollars
7 )The Good the Bad the Ugly
8 ) The Outlaw Josey Wales
9 ) High Plains Drifter
10 ) Unforgiven
11 ) Tombstone
12 ) Wyatt Earp
The Duke and Clint are the only actors I remember really what westerns I liked that they made (cause they made the better ones!). But I'd watch any of the Duke westerns over any other westerns any day.
