Hunting draws for the privilege of hunting species that are "protected" from the general hunt.

A couple of examples in Alberta, Canada: Moose and Mule Deer. Although Mule deer appear to carry the highest incident of CWD but regardless,

Hunting Draws are based on the number of applications made each hunting season by the individual. As more applications are made annually more points are awarded. Eventually a Special License is issued.

I made a suggestion on an Alberta Government Web page to consider Accuracy competitions, beginning with a few draws, to promote ethical hunting and encourage a competitive environment. More visibility to the general public promoting ethical hunting, increase interest for younger individuals, creating a positive atmosphere regarding firearms. Currently the Federal government is demonizing firearms.

My comment was passed onto the Director of Wildlife Policy and contact via email began on this topic.

After 17 email exchanges the negativity from the Director of Wildlife Policy rendered the idea into an abysmal quagmire of thoughtless comments.

On a positive note the President of Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association was open to the idea.

Anyone experience or know of a competitive shooting program for the privilege of hunting?

Not here in Texas. Interesting idea.

Wouldn't work. You'll end up with a bunch of guys with 20 pound guns that they can't field winning these competitions.

Yep, that was what I was thinking. The rules of the competition would be complicated and hard to enforce.

Not really mate. Over here in Oz the Sporting Shooters Association have a program called Farmer Assist. Shooters can put there name up to be entered on a list of shooters that will go out and do feral eradication on farm properties.

To be considered for this program you must display a certain level of competence and accuracy by shooting a designated target to a reasonably high standard with the rifle and caliber you hunt with and carry. This is supervised by a certified, and signed by, Range Officer on the day. Your rifle and caliber details are recorded and that is the only rifle you are allowed to use for the program. If you wish to use a different rifle, you must have it certified by shooting another target.

This system seems to work ok.
