For those of yall that hunt whitetail deer, do ya think fog has any effect on their movements?

Well, I used to beleive that they bedded down in a heavy fog. That was until last year. I went out opening day, and not 30 minutes after getting to the blind, an 8point came wandering in. He was only 45 yards out, but the fog was thick enough that I could only see his outline. I thought he was a doe until he put his head up and started chewing on a branch. He was probably out there for about 15 minutes until I dropped him.

I think fog would actually make them more at ease about travling.

Just an observation, nothing scientific, but I think deer will move a bit more during the day in conditions of low light. Like fog, a steady light rain with heavy cloud cover, etc.

Donut: I can't say how the deer likes the fog, but this hunter loves the fog. Something to do with the excitement of deer fading in and out of the mist. BTW have you had a chance to hunt your new blinds yet?

In my area (south Texas), deer move a lot during heavy fog. My assumption is that they feel like they are moving under cover. I've had them walk right under a tree that I was sitting in, with my feet dangling about 3 feet over his back.

In heavy fog, walking to your stand is quieter, because of the dampness, so this is good for the hunter. My only gripe is that I get a headache staring into the fog, trying to see movement. I've canceled hunts because of this, not because of my fear that the deer will not be moving. If your only option for a hunt is on a foggy day, go for it. I killed my third biggest buck on a dense foggy morning.

I love hunting on a day with light rain or mist. I've found that deer tend to move more during these conditions. I think I would cancel if there was a constant downpour, but, to run out quickly after a downpour is super hunting conditions.

I think, in my experience, They move more in the fog They depend more on other sences besides their eyes any way.

If deer didn't move during fog, light rain or snow they would starve in the Northwest. Because that's all it does during hunting season in the mountains is rain, snow or fog. The only time I've seen deer take cover is during heavy downpours or blizzard conditions...

Like Buckmaster says, deer move more in fog. Also doesn't sound travel better in fog?? If it does, it would make the deer feel safer too.

I shot a real nice buck once during a blizzard. It wasn't an all out whiteout but a blizzard just the same. I happened to go out by myself cause my hunting buddies didn't want to go. After walking a few miles I happened to stop and sit in a snowbank next to a bush for a bit and out he stepped right behind a Doe. I did have a hard time loading him and getting out of the hills with my truck but I had a great day and very it was enjoyable. But you're right, I've always found that they do move around in bad weather. Smile
