Hey all,
I am wondering if any of you out there have some experience using shotguns for coyotes? What loads do you use? Are the new tungsten loads worth the extra money? Any suggestions on choke tubes, i assume an aftermarket choke is needed. I shoot a benelli what choke tube companys should I look into? Any help would be great.

I am by no means the final expert here on shotgunning yotes but my experience says that #4 buckshot through 00 buckshot will drop a yote at 40-50 yards. The closer the better. Federal seems to shoot tighter in my guns than Winchester of Remington too.
Chokes-Usually the bigger the shot the more open the choke needs to be. The reasoning behind this is deformation of the shot. When you try to push 00 Buck through a full choke tube, It will flatten the shot and cause the shot to fly erratically. The only way to tell for sure is to pattern it in your gun.
A good start will be to try some 4 buckshot or larger in a modified choke tube, then try the same in a full choke tube. Count the pellets in a 18-20 inch circle and look for bare spots. You can get some fancy choke tubes but try what you have first.
I definitely would stay with 4 buck or larger.I have not tried the heavy shot dead coyote stuff but the physics and some guys on another board say it will extend your range a bit. I would not use steel shot either. Not enough momentum to penetrate deep to vitals or break bones on a mammal.
You will need to pattern the bennelli for what ever load and choke you use. Not all shotguns shoot a pattern to the point of aim.

I wouldn't use tungsten shot unless you are required to by law - it's damn' expensive & IMO less effective than lead.
I only use lead alternatives for hunting waterfowl because the law here says so.

we shoot wallabies here in kiwi land and I guess they are similar in size if not bigger. #2 lead works real good and #bb is great too we tried buck shot but too many holes in the pattern. either of these kill out to 40ish yards.I have dropped a large 40kg wallaby with #3 lead but that roo got three loads as fast as i could shuck the old winchester it was standing in the spotlight at around 30yrds and wasnt going anywhere. mind you though the dogs didnt like eating that one much. I prefer 3/4 choke. winchester superx #2 lead has to be my favourite load if I was limited to only one that would be it.
