Danny, I think I'd lube it every time, just to make it easy on the brass if nothing else. Look at Imperial sizing die wax for neck sizing.

well les ,i tumble my brass first because if you don't ,you will be diggin' media out of every primer pocket./ i learned the hard way too and it;s time consuming. then i lube (with PAM) the spray you cook with and then i resize the brass. clean up of the brass is easy, just wipe it off

Mike, thanks for your reply. Next time I'd lube only upper part of neck.

First post in this forum. Nice to be here!

Years ago a fellow reloader told me to wipe lube off with mineral spirits/paint thinner. Leaves a thin film that keeps cases nice and shiny. Does stink the place up a tad.

When priming with my Lee autoprime I just hold the preasure on the case and wipe it off with a paper towel.

Lube with Lee Lube - deprime/size - clean pockets - shake in a 2 liter bottle with CLR to clean and remove lube - wash with hot water in a sieve or colander - put in drill and trim to length and buff with fine steel wool - prime

My process
Tumble (adding autosol metal polish to media seems to help)
Trim
Debur
Clean inside neck with brush in drill
Lube with imperial sizing wax
Resize
Wipe with clean rag etc
You use so little resizing wax I have also been know to not bother wiping
Reprime etc.
everyone will have their own process that works for them.

I put my loaded rounds in the tumbler for 20 minutes.

Despite oft repeated internet rumours, it doesn't break down the powder or have any chance at all of primers being hit hard enough to ignite.

Vince from 13 Feb 2009 wrote:
Lester, I lube, re-size CLEAN then tumble.

My reasons for doing in this order is pretty straight forward.

I always wipe my cases clean of crud after firing them so there is not anything on them to scratch the dies.

I lube them for the re-sizing process, including the inside of the neck.

I then re-size, which includes decapping the spent primer, in preparation for reloading.

After re-sizing I wash my cases in CRC BRAKLEEN as mentioned a couple of posts back.

I then throw them into the tumbler for a cosmetic clean, although with the empty primer pocket, this area also gets a bit of a clean. I do however still clean the primer pockets anyway.

So, that is my rationale...is it right or wrong? Neither....it's just the way I do it cause that's how I think is best for me.

As for the liquid car polish....it does tend to slow down the tarnish rate, but I don't see that it is a "war winner" so I don't worry about it. I suppose there is also the thought of that polish being compressed into the chamber on firing....yeah I know...very minor, but its there nonetheless.

Cheers, Vince

Thats what I said I do 3 years ago and I haven't changed my process simply because it works for me.

Mac...I'm a bit uneasy about the use of CLR mate. In a thread sometime in the dim dark past here there was talk about the use of this product for cleaning cases. Apparently the acids used in CLR can leach the zinc out of the brass case, weakening the case. From memory I think it may have been Gelan that mentioned this, but I can't be certain.

Cheers, Vince

Vince :

I will check it out. My local gray haired gunsmith suggested this method to me.

There definitely is some controversy on the CLR use. After reading all I could find I am not yet concerned that the short shake I give the cases in 50% CLR solution is going to cause any problems. Here is one article that refers to its use. Scroll down to the section on reloading.

www.6mmbr.com/gunweek050.html

I will keep researching the subject and post any credible information I find.
