Not together at the same time, the Remington stuff shoots low compared to the sights, the Norma stuff is on the money according to the iron sight graduations.

Its been a while since I shot the Remington/Winchester stuff so I will have to locate my notes on how much higher to aim.

Thanks man, I'll try to post some pictures of my .308 and 8x56 so you can reference the firearms.

'Mitri....I'm sorta torn between all of the posts here on the viability of your box of Federal Premiums.

Should you communicate with Federal, including pics of your findings...well, yeah, that's not a bad idea mate. There may well be a very small problem in their loading process or QC process of which they are not aware. If nobody says anything, them they will not be aware. At the least, you could be inline for some replacement ammo, which is a bonus.

On the other hand, I also agree with those who say you will most likely not find a problem with the ammo...but your rifle is the one that will decide that.

The call is yours mate...but without making some noise, and putting some rounds downrange you will never know for sure.

Cheers, Vince

I'd say shoot it and see what it does.

I've never been a Federal "fan," but would never have discounted their ammo based on appearance. I find it hard to believe that the same factory that produces THE target ammo that all others are measured against can produce "hunting" ammo that Dimitri can discount strictly by "sight"...specially when he's not fired a single round of it....

Joe,

As I said I'm probably over reacting, but with all the talk about consistant seating depth effecting accuracy when reloading I found it odd for it to be such a difference.

DIMITRI,,YOU KNOW THAT YOU SHOULD SHOOT SOME OF THOSE BULLETS B4 YOU HUNT WITH THEM. hell, you might miss the buck of a lifetime if they shoot inconsistently.. may be a box of bullets loaded by a wineo that had a rough weekend or something.. they sure sound like they have a loading station out of whack

This is a picture of the ammunition itself, and I did some quick measurements with my calipers so there is indeed a difference not only with the seating depths of the canniture.

The one on the right is the farthest out of the case, while the one on the left is the farthest in, most are somewhere between, and I included 2 just to show the spread a little better.

I'm not so sure I would even test fire them. If the seat depth is that far out of tolerance, what about the powder charge. That too may be out of whack. I'd be leary of them.

Seating depth has little to do with accuracy with factory rounds as they are loaded genericly for all rifles and not just one in particular. The amount of difference in those rounds you pictured is not going to make that much difference in their performance from one rifle to another.

I see that all the schooling in the art of Machinist is making you quite observent (and picky), but remember. You didn't load them. Someone (a machine designed and built by a Machinist) else did...And not to your specifications. You want them to your specifications? Reload them yourself.

I have rifles that don't care where you seat the bullet and rifles that are very particular where the bullet is in relation to the rifling...

My favorites have always been ,Remington and Winchester.Still ,all the Federal ammo I use seems decent .

Bushy,

Less about me worrying where they should be compared to the rifling on my rifle or any other rifle, more worried about the tolerances which seem to vary by .025" which seems like a lot. Confused

I agree with Bushy on this!!!

If those bullets didn’t have a cannelure you’d never give it a second thought.
It may be surprising to some but this isn’t uncommon.
Use a ogive gauge instead of dial calipers. Distorted tips such as pictured and hollow points with their inconsistent tips do not give accurate measurements.
Nosler Ballistic Tips are well known for their accuracy and consistency. It is also common to see 2 to 3 different ogive readings in a box of them. I have had my OAL change because of this as much as .030 with out any affect on paper.

If you still feel it’s a issue E-mail that picture with your thoughts to Federal and let us know their response.

Already did, as I said I am probably over reacting but even my cheap 13$ a box Remington UMC has the ability to keep the ammunition loaded more consistency on the depth of the bullet. Seemed odd due to the fact this hunting ammunition is 35$ a box.
