Another good reason to have a firearm handy while in the outdoors, or even a can of pepper spray:

This pretty much confirms for me what I suspected about Coyotes, that they are not always scared of humans, as most people think.

I see them on the farm from time to time and all ran, at sight, except one. That one was a big male and showed no intent to run.... So the Bee stung him in the neck.

This business about them spreading, mixing with dogs and wolves and being agressive is not a plesant thought when you have sub teen grand kids that like to wonder around.
Best,
Ed

wtf I've been around coyotes my whole life and this has to have more to the story, more medical facts that led up to the attack-like maybe why women are not supposed to be on a brown or grizzly bear hunt when they are cycling(monthly). Confused

I read it earlier and it didn't seem right. MOST (key word there) animals won't bother a human unless something has caused a change. Change as in something wrong witht he animal or been around humans too long. Also what on earth was she doing out there alone?

If you don't feel safe carrying a gun or are in an area where you can't hit the sporting good/gun store and get some really strong pepper spry. Mine's for "bear" but for some strange reason has black light responsive dye in it. Very Happy

Its funny you should mention that Troubles...I remember many years ago when I was in the Army, two different units had equine mascot. One was a pure bred Pony of some sort...beautiful animal... and the other was a donkey.

The Pony could "pick" a woman from maybe 50m or more who was "cycling", and he would make a beeline straight for her showing his rather obvious "delight". The donkey was a little more lazy...he would wait till the woman came near him and would then show his "delight".

Lets face it...at that time of the month, the hormones and pheromones are flowing strongly through the lady's body...and animals have a much more acute sense of smell than we do and will pick up on those things very quickly.

Cheers, Vince

One thing to keep in mind is that smaller preditors do not attack just to attack. There is a reason they decide to stand and attack or fight. That reason could be injury or illness. But when a critter changes the normal pattern of the species, they are dangerous. As Tink said, do not go out in areas where preditors roam, without some protection, man or woman.
Best,
Ed

Fox makes a valid point.

But Mr. Fur-n-fangs starts eye ballin me and he' gettin' sum. Maybe I make it, maybe I don't. But I come first. Animals second.

They were put here for ME to eat- every last one of them, not the other way 'round. Pop's taught me that and 'Aint nothing more important than makin' it home in time for dinner- every dang day'.

Don't know guys. I tend to think it probably is not a function of the woman's estrus period nor of one of coyote injury. You have to understand she was hiking in a PARK. This is the kind of place that no one is allowed to "molest" the animals. Much like Yellowstone. People are attacked on the USA's National Parks and preserves annually by bears, bison, elk, cougar, and others. It's because these animals have no fear of humans at all, even to the point of thinking of a human as something frail they can bully out of their way or eat.

I think this is the lesson here. I don't really mind that we have parks in which we can't hunt. But Mrs. PETA needs to also realize that when they are not hunted, have no more fear of humans, humans may begin to appear tasty.

Where I live we have black bears who want to come into the yard to feed on fruit in the fall before acorns drop. I really don't mind the visit, but I tend to sick my two Lassie type collies on them to remind them that it is not nice to fool around with humans. The dogs will run them a couple of hundred yards and come home. But it tends towork. And black bears are hunted here. It's just that food is their number one persuit and they will take chanes if they are hungry.

Note that the article didn't say how big the coyotes were. I saw one dead on the side of the highway recently that I'll bet went 50 pounds or more. As I had mentioned in another thread, the "Eastern" coyotes have red wolf DNA mixed in them.

You make some very good and valid points TCKnight.

As civilisation encroaches on animal habitat, they "adapt and overcome".

"Mrs" PETA is most likely to comment, when someone is taken by an animal in the wild..."How wonderful...nature is fighting back, and what a totally natural way to meet one's end"

Cheers, Vince

Very Happy I don't doubt that mrs peta would say something like that-now if we can get her convinced to be on the coyote menu she would see that her form of nature is working and she should feel proud to give her body as nourishment for the poor canids! Shocked
