It's been a bad year for Canadians in the west. We've lost a couple people from grizzley bears and cougars. Now last week we had a 23 year old man killed from a wolf pack attack in N. Saskatchewan while doing surveying work for the Canadian government. It's not common for wolves to attack people. He was unarmed at the time, but you can bet they'll be toting shotguns from now on. I encountered a pack of eight a few years ago in N. Ontario while on a moose hunt. All of them were about a hundred pounds and evil looking devils, sure scared hell out of me. You have to be very careful in our wilderness. Best wishes.

I've never be in the woods unarmed....Never know when i'll have to shoot a garter snake again! .......I stepped on his tail and it came back and tried to bite my leg and i backed off and shot him

I should have mentioned that it's extremely rare that wolves attack humans. They usually give us a wide latitude. I quite agree with you. Even if going to the outhouse I take my trusty 12ga. I no longer frequent Provincial Parks simply because firearms are not allowed. Probably our major encounter is with snakes. They're not always the passive rascals one might think. It's almost like creatures in the wild don't realize that we're the top dog. Yeah, right! Best wishes.

I'll be heading into horse camp in a state park this thanksgiving. No guns are allowed, but I will have my trusty mod 19 close at hand for two reasons. well, make that three reasons. 1. We will be riding into the national forest. 2. I don't trust others that I don't know when I'm in camp. 3. Everyone in our party (about 18) expect me to be the group protector. They all know that I pack and they are very glad that I do...They saw the value of having a handgun in camp one year. Again, just the presence of that shinny nickled .357 magnum stopped an esculating situation when I came upon the scene...I ain't no hero, but Mr. Smith & Wesson is...

Now that is the wierdest...Everytime I try to post the number 18 (eighteen) the 8 comes up a smiley face. Wierd...I had to lie to get it to stick with a number instead of...The actual number in our party in Thanksgiving horse camp is 18. Not 19.

Just got in from Deer hunting, No deer but there is one less coyote to eat the fawns next spring.

You know Crackshot, for the past 10 some odd years i've been seeing coyote numbers increasing in Michigan, especially in the DMU 452 area and surrounding. In the area of which you hunt, is it the same way?

There is this SAVE the wolves thing here in Central Ontario. Well there might not be too many left in the park, but there sure is no shortage outside the Alonquin.
While deer hunting after a snow we might see a fresh doe and fawn track, then at least two or three wolves right on top of them.
That is our winter kill ,( WOLVES)
You can not hunt or trap them out if you tried . They just produce acording to the food supply. So far there is not a rabbit left in the bush, and they have learned to get the beaver out of the ice.

Around the northern rim of Gerorgian Bay (it's a section of Lake Huron) we have the Mississauga rattler. He's not one of the larger rattlesnakes, but just as poisonous. Out west there are quite a few larger rattlers is the dry interior of British Columbia. That's the only two places I know of off hand, but that's enough for me. I have no love of snakes. Truth be known I'm very leery of them, okay actually frightened. Best wishes.

We have rattlers here in Southern Sask in places as well. In fact there is a large snake pit south of here by the Frenchman River which is a very short distance from Montana.
