Darn good day...hooked up with a new mate, chased Gamble's quail all day. They like to run, a lot. Typical day of shooting jack's and hunting quail and dove, got some bags fulla goodies. but...something REALLY weird happened.

Popped a Gambles, picked him up, wrung his neck, into the bird belt he goes and back on with the chase.

20-30 mins. later I miss one, pick up my hull, go to stuff it in my bird belt and....out popped a bird. Hmmm....what the, bend over and ...it gets up and jams over to a bush. I run over and get an inch from grabbing it and BRRRRRRRRRRRR!- loooong gone. Shocked

I'm standing there watching the zombie fly off, my partner gets a late mount and starts firing but this thing was outa there. He saw me hit it earlier, wring it's neck and stuff it in my bag, this thing was lifeless and ragdolled, or so we thought...

I kinda stood there with my mouth open. My partner was bustin' up. Pretty weird dealio.

Maybe I need a tighter choke, maybe switch to "T" shot...or start working out more. Quail necks didn't used to be that tough. Laughing (pics coming soon)

Interesting Stovey, when steel shot first came out I had trouble nailing the birds also, ducks would sail into the sunset flipping me off. A good shooting buddy has one of them shot makers for making lead shot (not cheap) and I head over to his house make 50lbs of shot a year and drink plenty of beer.

Thats' a good point. I recently patterned my 20g. Used Fed, Rem normal game fodder and Winchester target loads. The target loads patterened really nicely and a wee bit tighter- I think they use chilled shot in the target loads. Right now my bird belt has a lot of mixed up stuff so it's shooting all over the place. Got a new case of Remington Gun Club target loads on the way, give them a try, so I'm using up all the odd-balls right now.

That bird had some scary juju....

Ive had parrie ducks do that, suppose to be caused by a pellet grazing the head just knockn the bird out. its funny as all heck, when it happens to someone else. come to think of it we shot a wallaby on the road side one night, put it in the boot of the escort and drove home, when we pulled into the driveway the car was moving, you guessed it the wallaby had "revived" and was bouncing in the boot. living in the middle of the city taking it out and shooting it wasnt an option but the claw hammer worked fine.

Head shots are the only thing that will do for those Zombies. Be glad it wasn't a deer in the back of your station wagon.

You didn't have enough Weety Bix for breakfast Stovey.

Interesting point about the steel shot...it doesn't carry anywhere near the hitting power of lead, or lead alloys.

OV1...the shotmakers aren't all that expensive mate...we landed one here in Australia for less than $300. This is the unit we bought:

Affordable Shot Maker

If using lead is a problem because of pollution etc, then switch over to bismuth...almost identical to lead in characteristics etc, but is acceptable as a lead substitute. Very little price difference as well.

I think he paid around $450 for his shot maker plus he bought an extra dripper just in case. My state started a dove hunt for the first time in over 80 years and the tree huggers got all bent outa shape when the governor reined in the dnr and reversed the ban on lead shot for dove hunting.

Omi, I can add that steel shot is a big step backwards and could only be justified a little when shooting in water.
For hitting it's not a problem, it's the killing part where it goes wrong. And when you hit a tree or an animal, steel starts rusting and will poison and kill it later. And when the tree with steel shot comes on a sawing-machine...
There are a lot of disadvantages on steel shot that are (willingly?) overlooked

Had a friend that shot a 4 point (10 point for you easteners). When I came upon him he was sitting between the antlers and screeming "Shoot it, shoot it!!"... Seems he had just grazed the head just behind the antlers.

Needless to say I was laughing too hard to shoot it at first.

Oh yer a lot of fun to hunt with....Mr. Laugh's in the Face of Death. My partner got a couple off at the zombie- he was laughing at me though. Esp since he saw me smoke it and wring it's neck. I'm still kinda scrathcing my head over this one.

Poppin' a buck pinning someone could be really tricky....howd you end it?

Ya had to be there and see it, Stovey. We were young and dumb at the time. But we survived.

We both laugh about it now...

Shot it low and behind the shoulder (lung/heart) with my trusty "Jack Handle" at very close range, like 2 feet. Then we both made a break for it. Buck jumped up and fell down. We both sat down and had a cigarette. Believe we were both 20 +/- at the time.

Copy that! That's one for the record books. Remember my first time walking up on a deer and pop kicked me to the side as I approached the belly side and he told me that's a great way to get yer guts kicked out. Sure as shootin' he poked the eye with a stick and it winked. *POP!* Now it's dead.

Congrats on a good hunt...

Over the years of hunting I have seen lots of "spooky" stuff in the mountains. My favorite is the mountain ghosts at night.
