|
My last foray out into the bush I carried my 22LR semi. rifle. Shots at hares and sitting grouse are common and the .22 does a nice job at head shots leaving more clean meat and avoiding those denture cracking little lead shot surprises. The only game I saw was ptarmigan that flushed ahead of me. Since I won't shoot into the air with any rifle I could only watch them flutter away. So I started thinking combo since pistols are not legal for hunting here in Canada. I seemed to remember both Savage and Stevens making a combo so I went online and nope they stopped making them. I did find that Baikal brings them in from Russia. I am interested in the 22LR with either the .410 or 20 gauge. It also comes in the .22 WMR.
Any experience with these or Baikal guns? Any thoughts?

I had a Savage/Stevens Model Model 24 which I have passed on down to my oldest son. The 22 barrel was on top and the 410 was on bottom. Shot many of squirrels and rabbits with this gun.

Matey if it has baikal written on it it will be great. solid as the proverbial brick sh%&house and wont let you down.
the only issues we have had is my brother in laws rifle has a dovetail off square and wasnt shutting right. a cheap visit to the shop fixed it now its great too. if you go with the .410 and limit your shooting to 30 yrds you will have a ball, just remember to pattern the darn thing as the .410 more than any other shotgun round is sensitive to what load you feed it. one load will be sweet and another patchy. my old .410 loved #4 but hated #5-#6 shot. buck shot and solids are available to take care of any suprises. and a 87grn solid doing 1400 fps is not to be sneezed at. not to mention the knockdown of 4 balls of #OO.

.223 /12 ga would be good for coyotes in brush and timber.

Yes I saw that one too. It's called the Taiga. They also make an over and under 30/06 but not sure why.
For those interested here is a website that lists all of them.
www.baikalcanada.com/home.htm
I was talking to a old friend in Ontario and his comment is that they are somewhat roughly made but very durable.

Baikal- absolutely positively cannot go wrong with one. Had a few. Beat the tar from them and they still run like tops. Killer bush and go-to gun. The price is right, they are built to USE and last. Get two, they're cheap. And when yer framing hammer wears out you'll have a back-up in the Baikal. I was most impressed with the barrel regualtion- it's spot on!
Simply hands down one of the best deals going in firearms today. And most large brand names use them for their econo line stuff. And that's a good thing!
One of my Remington's came with the pre-storage/inspection tag, totally Russian, still got it, the thing sat for YEARS in it's box, no rust or any issues at all.
USSG imports them here....

very versatile combo that. now to find out what loads it likes best!
there is a great selection of buckshot and solids for the .20g out there and the .22 mag is no slouch either, with good ammo its a great round. Ive shot goats, wallabies and even a big fat red stag with the magnum. Tip for you, if you ever have a big fat red stag looking at you from 40 yrds DONT try to head shoot it with the magnum, I had a lever action marlin and had 11 shots at my disposal the 1st 9 shots bounced off his head, yes thats right bounced!!! you could see the fur fly, took out an eye and pierced his ears finaly with a head ache it moved off so I poked the last 2 shots behind its front leg into its lungs, it went 200 yrds then dropped gasping and died. beautiful venison steaks it was too!!!

Sounds like pig hunting in the outback here. Pigs wallow in the mud then wander off to let their "armour plating" dry. I've heard of .308 rounds grenading and bouncing off the mud encrusted shoulders.
Cheers, Vince
