Title says it all: What is the craziest, 1 in a million shot you've made?

I was once with a friend out dove hunting in the Utah West desert... 50 miles from the nearest house, power pole, heck maybe even human in a place you could litterally see for 20 miles in all directions standing around a waterhole. Well we shot all our shotgun shells and my friend says "now what?" I jokingly grabbed my .22 and said "no problem we'll just use our .22's. He laughed and just then a dove flew in and I took a shot from the "hip" dropping it in midair like a stone. I cant say who was more suprised, me or him... perhaps it was the dove. We tried for another 20min as it got dark to hit one out of the air with .22's but never succeeded beyond that initial hipshot. I'd give a great deal of money to have that on video tape somehow.

How about you guys? Theres enough experience on this forum from gun shooters someones bound to have a good story as well Cool

Thats a pretty funny story DallenC.
I got pretty lucky this year when I shot my Javalina, he was running through the brush about 20 yards in front of me, I didnt think I had a chance so I just drew back and aimed at the edge of the bush where he was about to run out from behind and I let the arrow fly as soon as I saw the first part of his head. The arrow got there a lot faster than I thought it would, I nailed it in the head. It was a perfect brain shot. He went from a dead run to just plain old dead. Smile it was pretty funny. Anyways I will post some pictures here when I get them uploaded.

Knifeboy I'd rather be lucky than good, and this time I got lucky Smile

Hahaha yea I remember seeing that pict. You should put it in the photoalbum here too. I remember thinking "what the heck? why is there blood on its head?".

I'd really like to try hunting Javalina... is it draw or over the counter tags?

Its a draw tag here in Arizona, Its a lot of fun. You have a really good chace of getting drawn though. I guess not many people like it. I dont know how much and out of state tag would cost for a Pig, but I dont think it would be to much. My Brother comes down every year from Utah to hunt here in AZ. He doesnt hunt the Javos either (only deer). But the dang USO is causing lots of out of state problems for tag prices here.
I will post that picture here. I have already used my quota for disk space so I will delete some pictures and post the head shot pic for you.

When I was about 12 yrs old, I would shoot at crows flying over the pasture to their night roost. The range was about 100 - 150 yds and my hunting rifle was a single shot springfield 22 and my ammo was the potent 22 short. I would notice that on some of my shots the crow would drop about ten feet, then it would recover and fly on. Then came the shot when the crow dropped straight to the ground! I ran, full speed, through the feed lot and across the pasture to claim my trophy! Ah ha! Dead center in the eye!

Cool

4096KB is the new limit (4 megs).

My absolute all-time best shot was when I was 11.

We were playing with Jarts (lawn darts) and I saw a robin clear across the yard . I told my buddy to watch and I lofted the Jart in the bird's direction. I didn't want to hit the bird, but I figured that if I aimed for it, I'd just get close enough to scare it.

I nailed that poor robin right to the ground. My buddy thought I was a god. I was really bent out of shape for killing something in such a senseless way.

Later, we got tired of using Jarts the way they were intended and started flinging them at horizontal targets, particularly dead trees. We got pretty good at it before the adults caught on and made us stop.

Hunting groundhogs from my favorite hill with a 722 Rem 244 and 10X Lyman All-American scope. Used Kentucky windage exclusively as winds played havoc across the valleys. Across the valley some holes in the shale produced a nice stony ledge for sunning g-hogs. Put an 85gr Sierra BTHP over at the first target and drew some laughs as the bullet splattered shale on the holes edge and the hog disappeared. In the course of the next hour my 270 shooting buddies ribbed me and my wimp gun, as 2 more shots produced the same appearing results. We had to remove all dead carcasses to the fencerows for fox and possum feed as part of our hunting agreement with the farmers. I just had to check out the hole where my shots weren't going as expected and lo and behold I pulled three young neckshot hogs from it. I had the last laugh on that occasion.

On another occasion from the same spot, there was a forked tree with a den under it in a fresh mown and baled alfalfa field. Many a shots had been poked at that resident and he seemed to enjoy the challenge.
We just arrived and he was 30-40yds from the hole and I just had to try one. The 270 shooters concurred as noone ever wanted to waste ammo so early. The first shot hit within a foot and sent him to the hole only to reappear with his head out gazing around. About 25 mins later he was still in the same place and I declared him dead. That brought a few chuckles and I set up to execute. At the distances involved you could always see the bullets hit, so Kentucky windage was easy to compensate for. When the bullet hit he popped out and did a 180 turn in midair and hit the ground.
a few seconds later the tail went up and flickered the dead sign.
Believe it or not, noone there would go hunting g-hogs with me again.
There was no way to know the distance that was available to us, but after running the ballistics thru a calculator on these new puters it calculated 635yds. Close enough for me. Incidently, when the carcass was retrieved, I was asked to point out my aim point which was a knot on the left fork of the tree. A nominal 7ft high and a full four feet to the left of said head. I only took 154 ground hogs from that spot that summer. The next year a major Angus beef operation leased the farms and it became a wildlife sanctuary and beef pastures. No more hunting.

I was about 13 years old out gopher hunting with my older cousen Peter driving and me in the back seat. The wind was really blowing and we saw a blackbird on the top branch of a tree avout 150 yd away. The branch was whipping back and forth in the wind and the bird was having a hell of a time hanging on.
I told Pete to stop, I was going to shoot that blackbird. Well, my father was an excellent shot and Pete was in awe of his skill but he just laughed at me. I poked the 22 out the window and nariated the shot to Pete as I sighted on the bird. "Need a whole lot of elevation, and a bunch of windage, I'll add some more elevation because of all that windage. Now I have to time the back and forth movement of the branch." Bang: The bird just fell straight down.
Knowing what he thought about my dad, I just said little as if it was an every day shot.

This is more funny and stupid than any thing else. I didn't pick up a gun until I was 20 years old. While I lived in Virginia, a friend convinced me to go deer hunting with him on his farm. I bought a license and a Remington 1100 12 ga. (Buck shot was the only thing legal in the county I was going to hunt.) He picked out an area for me to sit on the edge of a cut corn field. Thinking that I would be better up higher, I climbed into a tree about 15 feet up. I tied a rope to my gun in case I dropped it and settled into the notch of the tree. Not long after, a 4 point came running headed right under my tree! I got the gun ready, took off the safety and started swinging on the moving deer as it ran into the corn field. About the time I was going to pull the trigger, the rope fetched up on a limb and prevented me from swinging any further. In desperation, I swung the gun under my leg and pointed it the best I could guess at the deer and shot. The deer dropped in its tracks. Looking back now I realize how stupid that was, both for me and the deer, but buck fever on your first deer sighting makes you do strange things.

How’s this. Three crows sitting on a branch about a foot apart, 385 yards away (measured after shot) a custom Krag in 218 Bee. This was a few years back. I held on the center crow so he was in the bottom of my sight picture and split by the vertical wire. Squeezed off the shot, lowered the rifle, waited for what seemed like a minute, then crow on the left just rolled over backwards.
My buddy said, “was that the one you were aiming at”? My reply “let’s step this off”. Wink

As a kid I nailed two sparroes on the wing with my Daisy BB gun. One was treetop high (cottonwood) and the other was downhill and about 50 yards out, flying dead away.

After getting my first firearm, a single-shot Ithaca Model 49, at about age 12, I was out hunting rabbits on Granddad's CRP land one day. A pheasant flew up at my feet and I instinctively raised the rifle and fired. The pheasants wings locked and it dove into the ground.

But the best shot I've ever seen goes to Uncle. Granddad, Dad and Uncle were out shooting clay pigeons after Thanksgiving dinner late 50's or early 60's. Uncle was doing the throwing and Granddad and Dad were doing the missing. Uncle got fed up with the misses and said he would show them how to do it. He went into the house and grabbed Granddad's Remington .22LR semi-auto (John M. Browning's design). Uncle made sure it was loaded and leaned it up against a fence, threw a pigeon, and grabbed the rifle. After Granddad and Dad both missed, Uncle took the shot. The pigeon was well past the last of three round Bultler grain bins when the bullet caught up and shattered it.

Side note. I always wanted that rifle but decided I wouldn't live long enough to inherit it. When I got out of the service in '74 I bought a brand new Browning in the same design and have enjoyed it immensly ever since. Good thing, as Granddad is now 93 years old and still has that Remington. (He and Grandma just celebrated their 74th together.)
