Someone asked me yesterday about what kind of grease would be best for the slide on his auto pistol. The gun, a SIG, has an aluminum frame and stainless steel slide. I told him that I wasn't sure but I had a good place to ask about it! Any suggestions?

Long a go I got a Aluminum frame ParaOrdnance that have a blued slide.
I use a drop of SAF-T-EZE Anti-Seize Copper SL-16C on the slide channel whenever I clean it,
and for the next 4 years, shooting over 10k rounds it shows very slight wear on the aluminum rail.

The anti seize compound is what usually put in bolts and nuts so that they would not seize under very high pressure.

I’ve never seen a manufacture recommend grease for slide rails!!!
I checked my Sig manual and it does not give any recommendations.
As I understand it if you want proper lubrication you should use oil!!!
I recommend FP-10 or Break Free.

Auto rails should always be greased. The amount of friction and movement of the slide throws oil off too fast. Just remember that a little goes a very long way. My current favorite (particularly for stainless) is Brownells Stainless Slick (part #083-303-012). It is tacky enough to stay in place and does a good job lubing, which is important to keep stainless from galling.

What's the OM say?

I'd use a half-drop of light oil or graphite in frosty condtions and only if the OM called for it.

Lubes + pistols = problems.

He's right. I'm a glock armorer and glock uses copper anti-seize from the factory. They recomend oil afterwards but you dont remove the anti-seize. You only need a small amount.

Thanks fellers! I did some online reading last night and found a wide variety of opinions on what works best. Anti-seize compound was mentioned, along with various greases and oils. I did notice that cold-climate guys trashed grease while warm-climate guys recommended it. Several folks used synthetic motor oil (I’ve seen that here too I believe). Brian Enos sell some stuff called “Slide Glide” that was also recommended.

Googled “Slide Glide” and found Brian’s site!!! Interesting!!!

This is the first I’ve heard of grease reducing recoil.........maybe that has something to do with guys liking it???

I’d be interested in hearing what the manufactures stance on the grease issue would be.
Next week if I’ve got some extra time maybe I’ll send some E-mails out!!!

I have been using an oil called Miltec that I got while I was in Iraq it's really good stuff. We really liked the fact that only a light coat would keep the M2 .50 cals shooting, and a few drops keep the M-4 and M-9 shooting all day. Even in the harsh desert environment the Miltec didn't attract hardly any dust.

That Slide Glide stuff sounds pretty good.

Gelan, you mention the copper anti-seize...I have a tin of that stuff and it is great. I also have a Locktite product that is similar and designed to do the same task, but it isn't copper but aluminium. It's every bit as good at doing it's job...and is a nice silver colour.

Cheers, Vince

I use a light film of RIG gun grease on all my auto slides and it works very well. Take care...

Military Artillary Red Grease. Non-hardening, non-seperating, does not seperate or thin when heated. Does not change viscosity over a wide range of temperatures from well below 0* F to well over 100* F. God only knows how old this can is and it still has not seperated to a liquid. Slicker then snot and able to withstand the impact of a 5" 38 gun...

I use it on ALL my bolts and slides...
