I know this is getting way off topic...but I feel that ultimately it does relate to the thread subject given that it is things like the Treyvon incident that can cause anxiety that leads to panic buying.
Anyway...I received the following link from a mate in NY. Before you open it and watch, be aware that it contains many words and phrases that I believe are particularly Politically Incorrect in the US.
However, it hits hard at what I think may well be a big part of the problem and believe me when I say this guy does not hold back or pull any punches.
Treyvon Martin and black slaves
If anybody is offended...speak up and I will happily delete the post.
Cheers, Vince

He's tellin it like it is, that's all. They seem to think they've got a leg-up if blame can be aimed at racial prejudice. It doesn't get them anywhere and only bolsters a fight. I don't understand the constant jump to racism. What good comes from that sort of conclusion, do they have some solutions they're going to throw in our faces, or do they just want to fight about it? They may as well be charged with terrorism. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Wright (oh you must hear the Rev. spew his Easter sermon ) it makes me ill because that's where Obama came from and he's our president. Charge them with terrorism and get it over with. They've practically been a lynching squad every time something remotely sounds like it's racism motivated. I've said this before, this aint Mexico. We have laws against lynch mobs, you are innocent until proven guilty.
Oh I almost forgot....I went to a gun show this weekend. No major buying of ammo but handguns were hot. Didn't look like frenzied buying, just the normal browsing and fingering......oh wait no...that was in the car, nevermind.
Thanks Vinnie

It was interesting to see that and other videos on there challenging the views presented by the media.

I just got this from Brownell's ;
One of the really big happenings in our industry right now is that the ammo for the very popular calibers − .223, .40, 9mm, .38 and .380 – is becoming more and more scarce. Lead times from the factories are extending out to 3rd and 4th quarter, even into 1st quarter 2013, and the “pipeline” from the factory to the retail store is drying up. What this means is every person who is interested in having these calibers to shoot over the summer appears to be buying as much as possible right now, when they can find it, for fear it will not be available or prices will increase to the point of being ludicrous. Our guys who attended the recent Tulsa Gun Show told us pallets of .223 ammo were disappearing within a day. This bump looks like it will be just like, if not greater than, the 2008 ammunition bump. We also get reports that it is very hard to have AR-15 rifles in stock and the smaller conceal carry firearms are moving in huge volumes this first quarter. We expect that pattern to continue throughout the summer if not all the way to the end of the year. All-in-all, it is going to be a fantastically successful year for the firearms industry.

I was in a gun shop today and the folks that work there told me they tried to order five different firearms for various customers and all were on backorder with no release dates. Some distributors say a few gun makers are not taking their orders right now. I suggest that if you need it and can find it; buy it. Don't wait. All the best...

Gil,
The story is the same in the gun shops that I visit. They have plenty of ammo and reloading components, but firearms, both new and used, are a bit harder to find. Take care...
