Quote::
The Dieppe Raid, also known as the Battle of Dieppe, Operation Rutter and, later, Operation Jubilee, was a Second World War Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The raid took place on the northern coast of France on 19 August 1942.

The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by limited Royal Navy and large Royal Air Force contingents.

Quote::
Of the nearly 5,000 strong Canadian contingent deployed that early August morning, 3,367 were killed, wounded or taken prisoner; an exceptional casualty rate of 68%.

Quote::
Mountbatten later justified the raid by arguing that lessons learned at Dieppe in 1942 were put to good use later in the war. He later claimed, “I have no doubt that the Battle of Normandy was won on the beaches of Dieppe. For every man who died in Dieppe, at least 10 more must have been spared in Normandy in 1944."

In direct response to the raid on Dieppe, Winston Churchill remarked that, “My Impression of 'Jubilee' is that the results fully justified the heavy cost” and that it “was a Canadian contribution of the greatest significance to final victory.”

Sounds like a cluster and the two leaders doing a bit of arse covering.
Churchill had enough practice in WW1 during the Dardanelles campaign, anyone remember Gallipoli and Suvla Bay?

Anything that involved Pommy Generals and tactics was bound to turn to crap.

Biggest problem I believe, especially during WW I, was the English Corp of Officers was full of members who either inherited their rank, were commissioned on the strength of Daddy's position in the aristocracy or they "bought" their rank for a status symbol.

Unfortunately it was no better in Australia's early days, but it was soon corrected here...it took a fair bit of WW II before the problem disappeared in Pomgolia.

There are stories of English Senior Officers sitting on a platform, back out of range, directing the battle whilst taking "elevenses" in a comfy chair and being served by servants or a Batman.

All Commonwealth countries paid a massive price for being "driven" by these morons during WW I...but none more so than the English soldiers themselves.
General Haig, when questioned, declared that all men accused of cowardice and desertion were examined by a Medical Officer (MO) and that no soldier was sentenced to death if there was any suspicion of him suffering shell shock. The Under-Secretary of State for War also and repeatedly misled the House of Commons on this matter. In fact, most soldiers accused of cowardice and desertion were not examined by an MO, and in the few cases where a medical diagnosis of shell shock had been made, the medical evidence was rubbished or ignored and the man was convicted and shot anyway. General Haig not only signed all the death warrants but when questioned later on this issue lied repeatedly. General Haig's behaviour in choosing to murder his own men places him in the category of war criminal.

Stress Injury to Health Trauma PTSD

I believe Gen Haig (Butcher Haig) should have been charged with war crimes for his campaign of executions of Commonwealth soldiers in the name of cowardice, then stripped of his title and all awards. There is no reason why this could not still happen, and history changed to reflect this decision.

Cheers, Vince
