I'm just sympathising with all you who have forgotten what positive temperatures are like Smile
Its been 42 years since I had a white xmas or winter in January, just reminiscing.

I will probably be shooting this weekend and, as always I will keep my target to make sure of my aim points. I don't expect to see any difference in the points of impact but I will attempt to graph the results with more precision including from muzzle out. That shouldn't change the rise from 20 to 40 to 60 to 80 but I will attempt to include muzzle to 20 yards in the new graph.

Good luck and enjoy your shooting mate. I'll be looking forward to seeing the results...you have thrown a couple of really curly ones at us mate...not just curly, but also very interesting.

My simple thoughts are that slope and alignment of POA on targets can account for the differences. Shooting on a positive (rising) or negative (falling) angle to the horizontal means the distance to your target is longer than if shooting on the horizontal. The slope and the relative height of the firing point and target determine the angle of a right angle triangle. The POA line is the hypotenuse. The horizontal is the base which is the actual distance that gravity affects the bullet not the distance to the target. The greater the angle, the more pronounced the effect on POI. If two targets are not in alignment they actually are at different angles to the horizontal. Ballastics programs assume a level shooting angle so the effect of gravity can be established. Some more advanced programs allow an angle to be input. Since the base is always shorter than the hypotenuse, the rule of thumb is to aim low baed upon the severity of the angle.

You can check your target alignment with a centered scope or even better with a surveyors transit. To find the actually rise of the range from the firing point to targets a clear plastic garden hose can be used. Google hose levels.

Good to be back.

Mac, I love the way you think but the slope is less than three feet and is constant from zero to 80 yards. It is less than a one degree.

As soon as the weather clears and warms up I going to try it again with a real target rest and multiple groups at each range. I will try to align the targets within an inch from bench to 80 yards.

It may just have been an aberration (I'm talking myself into that) but with several targets fired from my good rest at each distance I should see if the pattern is consistent. After that we can laugh about the weird aberration or scratch our collective heads and say, "wow! that is the weirdest thing I have ever seen".

I sure am glad you guys are so helpful! Thanks for all the input.

Paul,
Ive got a mate here in NZ who's testing .22LR firearms using a variety of ammo and cutting an inch of the barrel each repeat.
I believe he's got 15 different brands.models of rife (5 of each) and a pile of different ammo so statistically he's going to produce the goods. He's firing over 50 meters from a vice therefore he's eliminating the human variable. he's chonographing the ammo at muzzle and 25M down range just to see how good the manufacturers are.
He's getting my .22LR and is going to trick it as best we can. Ive just put a 4-16 x 50 scope on it as we're all playing with Long range .22 shooting (out to 300 meters) and I'll use mine on wabbits Hares and birds.

Once he publishes it will be interesting. He got a degree in Sports Scientist and is a real firearms enthusiast - he's shot IPSC and has competed at Bianchi a number of times, he has won the Ballinger Belt 3 x running ( a major Military style gun shoot here in NZ) and is a very respected firearms instructor.
Once he releases his findings I will Post them.

I hope he starts with a long enough barrel. Even at 26" I was still getting higher velocities than shorter barrels.
