462 yard coyote in the avatar is the longest measured one for me.

I guess you make your own luck but it was a lucky shot as I had to shoot offhand to get above the brush around me. The 110 V-max 30-06 at 3300 fps dropped it where it stood though.

I made the Varmint Hunters Assn "Down Range Club", or the 500 yard club if you will with a 518 yard shot on a prarie dog with a Ruger K77VT in .223 Remington. Took 4 shots!

I can't imagine what a prarie dog looks like at 500 plus yards, did you have your glasses on? Sniper

Roklok, my Leica 1200 will range a woodchuck to 700, I know. It is difficult around here to find a longer shot, so I haven't tested it on a woodchuck beyond that.
The 1200 will range a solid object to a full 1200 yards or more.
One problem you run into with using the laser rangefinders at the longer ranges is holding the thing steady enough...doesn't take much wiggle to have the laser beam move off the object you're trying to get the range on. I found that mounting the rangefinder on a tripod or resting the rangefinder on a sandbag helped increase the distance you could measure.
As to scope reticles for long range shooting, IMO the Mil Dot has dots that are far too large- the dots totally cover the woodchuck at the long ranges.
The newer long range reticles that Burris and Leupold are selling now- with hashmarks for several distances look more useful.

george -You may be surprised...kinda depends on the background and terrain but I start having trouble seeing them with the naked eye out past 250 yds. and by 350 yds. not likely you will see them at all without optics. With a 15x scope 400 yds. works pretty well but I want more if I were shooting farther all the time. At 500 yds. you step into a whole different realm.....equipment requirements go up. You are now past using 'holdover' and either 'mildots or significant scope adjustments' are the only way to make shots. This is where the quality of your shooting equipment either shines or is deemed totally worthless....those cheap optics, make shift rests, factory ammo, poorly bedded and scoped rifles, poor quality handloads and such start to fall by the wayside.

Tus- 551 yds. .221 FB took him on the fifth shot....put the bottom mildot over the top of his head. No witness.....no count but I checked it twice.

Going to the farm again this weekend but I have work to do before I can shoot.....have to fix the combine.

The only time I was successful with a long shot was when I was hunting coyotes and nothing was responding to my calls. A friend was with me and suggested shooting at a 16 oz plastic coke bottle at some ridiculous distance I didn't know, way beyond 500 yards though. I had my savage 243 that day and the scope was set at 12 power. I shot but couldn't tell where I was hitting. He pulled out a spotting scope and helped to walk in my shots.

I never changed my scope adjustments once I hit it. Some time later I went to our local range and set up a target at 100 yrds. The grouping was great, just 13 inches high. I was at 12 power when I shot at that 100 yrd target. Since I was using hand loads, I couldn't be sure how far that coke bottle was for sure but figure it had to be near 600 yrds guesstamating with what I had to go with. Nothing scientific here. Confused

Me and a friend was playing around one day shooting our hand guns, We have a private shooting range on his property thats about 1 mile long.
Any way, we had a steel drum filled with water and I was wondering if I could hit it at about 1/4 mile, I started in shooting, wouldnt you know it! I hit it on the 4th shot with my 44 magnum Desert eagle, put the rest of that magazine into that drum from there too. Bruce hit it with his 357 mag S&W as well. I think 1/4 mile with hand guns is good shootin, I realize its only about 400 yards or so but we were shooting with nothing but the racks of our quads for rests.

My best is a Groundhog at 1005 yds.. Sad I was using a 257 Weatherby, 100 gr. Nosler BT, 6x24 Sightron W/target knobs. This was done from the prone with a Harris bipod, two shot, 1200 Leica rangefinder.

My longest critter shot was just over 800 yards across a small valley in NH. We had a great setup, on one hill, a picknick table with bags, shooting to another hill with chucks up the side, in short grass. Gun was a commercial Mauser action, Hart 26 inch, 1-8 twist barrel, chambered in 6.5x06. Scope was a 12x Redfield. Load was a Sierra 100 HP over H4831. This was in the late 60s, so range was walked off plus best guess situation.

My longest walking crow shot is 354 yards with a 22-250 AI and 75 gr Hornady. Gun is a Remington action with a 26 inch, 1-7 twist SS Lothar Walther barrel and a Kiplinger single set trigger. That was a laser ranged shot and a one shot kill an ATN scope with a 50 BMG cam that matched the 75's trajectory. I used a ballistics program to match the two and set up the scope.
