Swampfox,

5 for everything. Very Happy

---> 30-06 Springfeild or 8mm Mauser or 303 British take your pick for the general all around ammo to use
---> 30-30 For the Bush Gun
---> 45-70 Goverment For Dangerous game
---> 45 ACP or another 45 class round For the Handgun
---> 12ga For the Shotgun

More then that I cant really see the point Confused And to be honest that list is as many rounds I can think I'd honestly need at most. Smile

Dimitri...One NEVER has enough guns. And you will be hearing arguments on your list. That is for sure....I, myself have issue with the .45-70 for dangerous game...I would be inclined to pick a newer big bore calibre...

Bushmaster,

Yes there will be arguments and its not perfect. And you know who said I want to limit myself to one of each ?? Laughing I was just counting the types ammo not the rifles Wink

As for Dangerous Game, yes a bigger bore would be nice, but I figure a 45-70 with one of thouse really heavy bullets would do just fine shooting a Grizzly at about 100 yards away without breaking my sholder under the recoil Smile

I wonder which of all the cartridges mentioned are reloaded the most. Somewhere along the way I lost track of what this thread is all about, reloading myths?
Keep it coming...

Hello Daveyboy,

Two things I've learned from years of reloading concern nickel cases. One is they will scratch the holy bejeebers out of you sizing dies, and 2, if you use bevellers to put an edge on the inside/outside of your case mouths the nickel brass will dull the tool in a hurry. Otherwise the case mouth bevellers will stay sharp almost indefinitely. Best wishes.

HOw about the need for faster powders in short barreled guns.
ie:
"I have this 4" barreled TC encore in 300 Win. Mag. and I am looking for loads for it. All I can find is loads for a 24 and 26 inch barrel. What powder would be best for the highest velocity in my gun?"

Ok, pardner, ya got two things wrong The powders that give the highest velocity from the 24 and 26 inch barrels will give the highest velocity in your four inch Encore; AND if your were concerned about velocity why did you buy a four inch barrel?

We see these kinds of posts from time to time and I genuinely feel for the guy asking the question - he obviously has no clue - but I don't have any patience with the guy that sees the first answer and then comes on with:

"12 grains of Unique is the best load for a barrel that short because otherwise you are going to be wasting all that unburned powder comming out the end of your barrel in a giant red-orange fireball."

The guy MIGHT be right about there being a huge fireball but everything he has just told the guy is so wrong. The only thing that determines the best powder(s) for a given cartridge is the amount of room in the case and the weight of the bullet sitting on top of it. Otherwise we would see loads for the 357 in 10 inch barels using WW748 or AA2230. We don't see loads using those powders because you can't get enough in the space that is available to get pressures where they should be. Now you can get enough bullseye in a 300 win. Mag case to raise the pressure to its maximum but it won't stay high long enough to get the bullet to any respectable velocity - and in a 24 inch barrel it might not make it out.

So, what are the arguements for faster powders in shorter barrels to get good velocity?
