As Ive mentioned I am in Montana
New to Montana really, and need to know if I have to register all my firearms with the sheriff's dept, or just the ones l want to carry concealed?
I am schedule to go through my concealed weapons course to get my license next month.

I would ask the sheriff about registering firearms. My personal preference is to avoid firearms registration whenever possible. Registration has two purposes; to raise revenue and identify the last legal owner. My good friend had his vehicle stolen a few years ago from a hospital parking and locked inside was his registered handgun. To date, no one has re-registered either the stolen registered vehicle or the stolen registered firearm. All the best...

Like Gil, I too am very opposed to firearm registeration. We have it in Australia and have to suffer the indignity of thge Police coming into our home for security checks of our firearms. I was 'visited' last week, without any problems thank goodness.

He hit the nail squarely on the head when he identified two of the reasons or purposes for it, but he missed the most important and potentially the most dangerous......... the authorities know where to go to pick up/collect the firearms if made illegal and they know what and how many to pick up.

Cheers, Vince

also, as Tracker once said why he is against gun registration, " A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government"
I believe he was quoting an author.

Here is a wake up call to those thatmay be unaware of the results of banning guns or voluntary disarming. A very good read:
Subject: Gun Law
Australian Gun Law Update

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts...
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent ;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.
(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in "successfully ridding Australian society of guns." You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note Americans, before it's too late!

Those stats don't surprise me in the least Paul. Our country has wasted billions on a gun registry program that is at best impotent. Criminals are their concern, they say, and yet by the very virtue of their nature, are criminals going to adhere to a new law? That would sort of take all the fun out being a criminal, wouldn't it?

So, the odds of someone coming illegally into my home and illegally armed far outweigh the odds of me being able to defend myself from him. Brilliant, Ottawa, just ******* brilliant.

I'm pretty sure she was right and I was quoting someone else, I don't come up with stuff that good on my own. Now...if I was drunk that was an accident.
