Only two weeks into hunting season and I'm basically done for this year.

I went out before dawn heading for one of my favorite Mule Deer areas. After wandering around for about two and a half hours, I had only seen a couple does. I decided to head for another spot that was 50-60 kms away and try hunting the mountains above 4000 ft, quite often the really big Mule Deer bucks will be up high until the first snows drive them down. Instead of taking the highway, I cut cross country on a logging road, hoping to see some grouse along the way. It had rained a great deal last night here and in areas a fair bit during the day. As I cruised along I spotted some fresh track on the side of the road. The animal seemed to walk quite aways down the road then I saw that it had gone up an old logging road. I parked the truck and decided to walk up after it and see what it was. (I already knew what type of critter it was, just not if it was a legal one for the hunting season currently open) After climbing up this old road for about 200 yards it opened up into a very nice meadow type area. The tracks were still going down the road and I followed it around a bend to get a look into the next open area. As I rounded the corner there he was, a bull Moose about 175 yards away. I raised my binoculars to see if he was legal, three points on the one side....shitty.... Oh, two points on the other side, he was legal. I raised my 7mm Remington Mag, held just behind his front shoulder and let fly. As usual, the 7mm did it's job magnificently and the animal dropped where he stood. It's the way every hunt should go if you do things right. Funny thing was, I hadn't set out to take a moose today.

Now, the "fun" began. For those of you who hunt Moose, I recommend that you never try and load a Bull Moose in the back of an SUV..... BY YOURSELF!!!!! Today is proof that it can be done, but I gotta tell ya, I'm a hurtin unit tonight. Oh well, a little hard work and a very sore back is worth the great moose steaks and roasts I'll have in the deep freeze for the winter. With this Moose I'll have more than enough meat for the next year, so I guess there's no point in hunting anymore till next season.

Here are a couple of photo's I took.

Cheers, Vince

Thanx Vince

He is a younger bull Vince. Unless you get a limited entry draw for a cow or any bull, the only thing open is what they call an immature bull. I guess they're trying to get the age of the population up. I didn't take him to the butcher yet, will do that tomorrow, so I'll get the weight then. Yep, he should be good eats for sure, especially since it was such a clean kill. Bang, down and done.

Just got back from the butchers....355 lbs hanging weight. Pretty good size for a spike fork bull. Butcher is going to hang it for 10-14 days, depending on how busy he gets, should be awesome eats!!!

It is a little disappointing that my season is basically over. I may still go out for a Mule buck, but he's going to have to be a real monster for me to take him.
