Thanks for the input Bushmaster,

My dad has a Cheif Crazy horse commemerative and a box of 38-55 he has for it. Never fired it though. I was thinking about taking it out and shooting it seeing as he has the ammo and its just sitting in his gun safe Razz

If I ever get a lever action it will be a 30-30 I think. Just because I'd only need it for really close range work in the bush while hopefully successfully stalking game Cool

Yep, I'm sorry but I do like my Marlins. I do not care much for a 94 winny. I had one in a 30-30 once for about a day....... Embarassed

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
It sure is fun to stir the caldron. Bonk Wave

My first lever action was a 30-30 Winchester. I took a lot of deer with that old gun. Bought it used and made money when I sold it to buy the Model 70 300 Winchester Mag. Took some game with that rifle too.

When my ex left she sold all the guns I had as well as all of my tools etc. I just don't want to buy too many in my old age, so I'll buy one that can do anything on this planet in one rifle. (My 270 isn't for sale though.

Shucks....And here I was satisfied with my little Thutty-thutty. Now you want me to go out and buy a .45-70??? Hummmmm...Might not be a bad idea at that Very Happy ...Even though I use two rifles (.30-30 Winchester and .30-06 Browning) I have to side with Shomebigbore. besides the .303 enfield is an obsolete round replaced by better more versitile calibres. Yes. I know. So is the Thutty-Thutty. But it is such a fun rifle to hunt with...And for Pettey sake...Calm down...This is only a talk forum for passing ideas. Not attacking each other...Though I DO find that fun too. Cheers

Hey ya Bushy...like you I am satisfied with my Mod 94 "dirty turdy"...love it to death, it just feels "right" in my hands and on the shoulder. Love Had a TC Contender in the same calibre. Had my fill of 45.70 when a mate conned me into test firing his 500 grain loads....had a bruised shoulder for a week, and the loads were good! Shocked Embarassed

Haven't fired a .303 since 1966, didn't like it then and I haven't really changed my opinion of it now. The old "smelly" (SMLE) was designed as a military weapon and as such is not a refined hunting rifle, but still more than adequate for its DESIGNED purpose....many many aussie soldiers owe their lives to its capabilities. Smile

a 30 06 is a target rifle

and a mauser is a hunting rifle

a enfield is a combat rifle

all these statements are true but kick vs recoil vs kill power is what i was discussing.

for deer sized game up close a 30 30 cant be beat {200 yards max}

a elk sized target at long range a 30 06 is hard to beat {300=500 yards}

for deer to elk sized game at medium range the 303 .311 round is hard to beat vs the recoil to kill ratio {100-300 yards} and will kill big bears or elephants if your hunting elephants in north america.

the dia is larger than the 30 06 and the round can be uploaded safely to lower 06 fps speeds with alot less felt recoil and as well the velocity can be down-loaded to 30 30 fps speeds easily plus theyre cheap if you reload. under 4 dollars a box and theres a huge selection of bullet weights and styles from spitzers to boat tails to round nosed to full metal jackets to ballistic tips, 100 to 215 grain bullets with a legitimate kill range on elk at over 300 yards and yes they will shoot over 1000 yards if your man enough to actually shoot 1000 yards and is the fastest bolt action ever made.

as well as new enfield style firearms are being made today.

8th most used big game hunting firearm in history, used for game from groundhogs to elk to bears to elephants to cape bufflo, seals, walrusses and even small whales used in the artic more than any other firearm today.

new may be better but not nessacarily.

Evil or Very Mad Flame Bonk Lame Nananana

I hope you enjoy your bear hunt with your 303. I sincerely do. Please let me know where to send the flowers, as the 303 ammo needs to be personally handloaded now. It isn't listed along with the hot load ammo makers. I couldn't find it anyhow, but I didn't look long.

Please be happy with your 1000 yard wounded elk shot. Please accept my apologies for not accepting your analogy of the famous and venerable 303.

I have only one question. Please reply and I'll leave you alone on "this subject". WHY DON'T THEY MANUFACTURE THE 303 OR 311 ANYMORE. MY FAVORITE IS OLDER THAN YOURS AND I CAN BUY A BRAND NEW RIFLE FROM ANYWHERE IN THE RANGE OF 415 U.S. DOLLARS TO 3000 U.S. DOLLARS. AS FOR LEVER ACTIONS, I CAN BUY A BOLT ACTION 45/70 WHICH HAS A MAUSER ACTION AND 22 INCH BARELL TODAY.

I CAN'T FIND 303 IN LEVER ACTION.

Now, you won your point. The wonderful, venerable, unbeatable 303 is your favorite. That's why it is still in production under that caliber.

OK, I give up. You win. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Nananana Party ROFL ROFL Sniper Very Happy

What makes these true ?? Confused

Last I checked the Mauser was a battle rifle as well in one of its many forms (Springfeild M1903, German K98, Yugo M48 etc). Confused

And I do belive the 30-06 is one of the more classic rounds to use for hunting in the US and Canada Confused

Personally I'd use something better then a 303Brit for bear. Personally opinion seeing as its a underpowered round. SAAMI lowers the pressures of the 303 because of the old rifles that couldnt handle higher pressures ;). This means you also lose alot of velocity. Hodgdon lists a maxium of 44,000 CUP and 2550fps for the 303Brit with a 180gr bullet. Smile The 30-06 does up to 50,000 CUP with 2800fps with also a 180gr bullet. Very Happy

I dont know about you but the 303 was good when it first came out being a smokeless vs the BP rounds but today its really under powered. Smile

PS If you honestly think you could kill a animal at 1000 yards with that gun please just give up hunting. Wounding a animal in a non-vital spot at that distance with the 303Brit is crule. Mad I'd like you to go out and shoot a 3ft by 3ft peice of paper at 1000 yards and tell me how many shots actually hit the center foot ?? I bet you wouldnt even get a single shot in there Wink Oh and no doing anything more then quick windage since in a real hunting situation you wont be using wind meters and the like Wink

Knock down power IMO is the careful selection of the caliber , the bullet , and the shot placement ..
This is fast going from a question about knockdown power to "mine's better than yours , and this is why yours aint any good " .. And appears to be a little animosity brewing here ..
Let's be careful what is being sent back and forth here ..
Jack

Sorry Jack,

I didnt mean to be roud to anyone or anything like that. I was just trying to get him to understand his 303Brit isnt a do everything rifle out to 1000 yards. Sad

Personally I got a 8mm Mauser that is also underpowdered thanks to SAAMI specs.
