Well it might be fun to start something. My slug gun is an old 3-shot 20 ga Mossberg bolt action smooth bore. It was my father's and I cut the barrel down. I rigged up a scout scope mount on it and it shoots foster slugs pretty good, especially Brenneke. I can achieve minute of deer accuracy with it so a rifled barrel should shoot better then mine. We could have an accuracy contest.

I have noticed the wind can push the slug around pretty good (bad) compared to a centerfire rifle at 100 yards.

My old crappy Mossberg 500 12 gauge won't shoot as good as Joe's, but it will shoot 7/8"" groups at 100 yards with 2 3/4" Winchester Supreme Partition Gold sabot slugs. It has some recoil, but I've never felt it when firing at a deer....

My tactical shotgun which has an 18.5" barrel with Rem, 2-3/4" slugs hits my 12" x 18" targets pretty much center mass, off hand at 75 yards... and kicks like 2 mules.

one thing we learnt real early on about shooting the 12ga. do not fire it prone unless absolutly necessary. the recoil has nowhere to go eg your body cant move backfrom the force so you feel it all. a fence post to lean over or sitting is heaps better.these new steelshot loads kick a heck of alot more than the old lead we used and we have adapted to that.but I tell you there is no way I will be shooting a 3" steel prone unless its unavoidable.

Hand is doing good. The constant sharp pain has subsided to just an occasional dull ache. The "plaster" comes off in alittle over 2 weeks.

If I remember correctly... I calculated the recoil of my Mossberg 835 with 3.5" turkey loads and found that it was the same as the .416 Rem Mag rifle I was thinking about. I don't mind some recoil but its no fun to get belted out from under your hat!

ok these stats are old but still pretty close. .270win 130grn rifle 8lb recoil16.88ft pounds.
.458win 510grn rifle wieght 9.5lbs recoil60ftpounds
12ga 1 1/4 oz game load gun wieght 7 3/4lbs recoil 30.8lbs
as I previously stated 12ga recoil is not too bad but not good prone as the force has nowhere but into your shoulder to go. I dont recall ever hearing of anyone dumb enough to fire a big bore rifle prone either!!! I guess it wouldnt be pleasant.

After mounting scopes on friends slugguns, and sighting them in for them, and doing it at the gunshop, I much prefer a 44 magnum rifle/handgun to deer hunt with. cheaper, easyer on the shoulder and pocket book.
I have a slug gun but rarely use it. It has the slug barrel on it for my sons use. (he loves recoil) Hes young though , when I was young I didnt mind recoil either, after I broke my back, recoil, rideing motor cycle along way, ATV rideing, horse back rideing.......Ect. bothers me alot. After a day of goose unting, I could not get out of bed the next day. After fireing a full box and most of another 3" federal steels I HURT. Call me what you want.

Try some 3 1/2" Winchester Supreme XX Magnums (2 1/4 oz. of #5 shot @ 1150 fps) outta a Benelli Nova. |
Been there done that......With a Maverick !!!
IMO the 3 1/2 offers no real advantage in turkey hunting.
