Thanks, Suz! Looks like Graf & Sons has updated their website!

Gotta love it...........Of course these types of charges are nothing new !!!
I just wish someone could explain it so that it makes sense to me. (other than because they can)
We take daily delivery of much greater risks that don't come with any hazmat fees.................

I hear you Chambered, I ordered 2 times this year from Midway and the first order back in April was for 10lbs powder and 3000 primers and I paid $25 hazmat fee.
The 2nd order was in October for 4lbs powder and 2000 primers and the hazmat fee was $34.99.
So I called Midway and asked and they were very polite and she told me that gunpowder shipped by air is $35.00. I said ok, I also order from Midsouth and they do NOT ship gunpowder by air? I have no idea what to make of this, when one company says it can and the other says it can't.

Many years ago, back in the day, when I was in the Army, I did a Dangerous Goods (DG) Pack/Accept Air Course. You would be surprised what can and can't be sent by air and what sort of packaging is required for different items. You will most likely find that it comes down to what the person signing off on the AIR consignment is prepared to do in order to ship the consignment. There are many things that can easily fall into the "too hard" basket because of the requirements for packing.
If you get a chance, find a book on the requirements and look up the relevant UN # (printed on the container somewhere) and check out the requirements for packing. As an aside, check how many everyday items in your house now carry a DG UN # and what the requirements are for them. It gets very confusing mate.
Cheers, Vince

Not too long ago Graf's offered powder/primer shipping with a zero hazmat fee if you bought over a certain amount. I compared their total price without hazmat fee with Powder Valley's price for the same stuff with the hazmat fee and guess where the price was best? That would be Powder Valley even with the hazmat fee so be careful of how you compare prices.
Would you like to know how I got 50% off my last hazmat fee from Powder Valley? I shared the shipping cost with a friend who also wanted reloading components.

righteo people...
from a man in the transport industry heres the skinny on DGs
gunpowder/ loaded ammo is basicaly DG class 1
class 1 cant be loaded into the same vechile as ANY other DG!!!!!
CLASS 8 is corrrosive the most common we deal with is janola or common old household bleach. this we puppy cant be loaded into a vechile with foodstuffs.
class 2 and 3 flamable liquid and flammable solid also cant go in the same vechile....
Its a pain in the arse to work around eg I have a pallet of ammo for another town sitting at work now that couldnt go yesterday or today because of another dg being onboard.
now heres the bit that really sucks the big kumara... I can go to the supermarket buy bleach pack it in the same bag as my food/groceries sit it unsecured on the back seat of the car next to the firelighters and white spirits and case of ammo I bought while I was out and break no laws... doing any of that at work would cost me my licence and the fines would buy a reasonable house...

bigger shipment, larger quantities, more significant consequences.

a single car battery class 8 in a truck load of food use cardboard packaging or full of groceries. is easy to forget but if you get caught the items in the vechile are condemned and YOU have to pay to replace them and dispose of them according to the fellas that run DG courses. Radar feel free to correct me here. But that is what Ive been told and I deal with this stuff all day.
