My daughter loves shooting rim fire guns as we have 4 of them in the house. They are more toys then tools really like the hunting rifles are. Anyway she enjoys shooting my Ruger 22 charger and my taurus 17 HMR pump. She shoots quite well also. The issue I have is that I am not looking for a first rifle rather I am looking for her first deer rifle. Rim fire are not legal to hunt deer with here in Oregon. I am pretty set on a 243 as I have a fair amount of reloading stuff for it. I used to have Savage model 111 in .243 and enjoy shooting it except for one aspect, I could not draw in a tighter patern at 100 yards more then the size of a 3 pound coffee can. I talked to several people including my Grandfather in law who used to shoot 6mm in match. It was suggested that for the rate of twist the rifle had the 100 grain bullets I was using were likely to heavy. At any rate I regretably got rid of the gun and am now looking at getting something for my daughter to hunt with for this next deer season.

ok man now we are getting somewhere
If she likes and can handle your taurus 17 why not forget all about the twoforfree and get one of those wonderfull Taurus pumps in .44??? think about it before you scoff
she already is familiar with how it works so it wont be a huge change and any deer under 100 yards is gunna be deader than dead probably even more so than with .243. bullet placement is still important but maybe the slower larger slug will give a wee bit of leeway. easy to get a new set of loading dies and hey a new challenge working up some nice easy/soft shooting loads that wont kick her around but will stop deer well. the boys here on the site even do cast loads you could borrow the data from. give it some thought.

Your Savage should have had a 1-10 twist which works just fine with 100gr. bullets !!!

Did you try different type/brand of bullets ???

OK...as Elvis said...we are getting somewhere.

You daughter has been shooting for some time and is obviously quite familiar with shooting, so I support the idea of a .243 Win. It is what I would consider to be the minimum calibre for deer and does not have nasty recoil. Yeah, I know that small calibres have taken deer successfully, but when the chips are down and the excitement levels go up, the larger the calibre the more forgiving it will be with a less than perfect shot.

As Chambered suggested, look at different type and brand of bullets. I load the Remington 80gn PSP bullets ahead of 38 gn of Varget for my .243 Weatherby Vanguard and this gives me .7" groups at 100m . I would certainly recommend looking at a different bullet/load combination to draw that excellent accuracy out of your Savage that we all know it is well capable.

Cheers, Vince

Unfortunatly I no longer have the savage but I am going to be getting her a rifle after the first of the year. I am planning on loading some 85 grain hallow point boat tail rounds that I have for her in .243. Everyones info is greatly helpful.

My boy has a mini-mauser in 7.62x 39 the recoil is light and it is effective I like the round but the rifle has some drawbacks if I were to do it again I would get one of the CZ bolt action carbines. The feed is really rough and the bolt has to be man-handled, also the stock split on the first trip to the range and we had to hurry up and accra-glass repair it before season so we could go re -zero it while we were repairing the wrist we went ahead and bedded it and that cured the accuracy and the chance of it splitting something again. Now that season is over I am going to take it apart and stone the feed lips and feed ramp to see if I can smooth up the feed any.

tlo7mm, are you near a Cabela's or can you order on-line? They are selling the Rossi Trifecta combo for $279 from 8 to noon. Its a break-open with 3 barrels, .22, 20 gauge, and .243.

No cabelas here but we have a local store that sells the trifecta for about 10 dollers less everyday. I haven't bought one because I was thinking of getting a repeater but I am trying te get everyones openion on it so that I can be sure that the route I am going is probably the best route. I have nothing agains single shot rifles as I make my shots count when hunting but I also like the idea of having a backup shot especially for a novice hunter.

I make my shots count when hunting but I also like the idea of having a backup shot especially for a novice hunter.

Seems to me, a single shot would do the trick of teaching your daughter that the first shot needs to count. You are going to have to accompany her anyway and can provide the back-up shot if needed. I can't think of when I've seen the back-up shot be better than the first.

Unfortunatly when I mentore her I am not allowed to carry a firearm and I am not allowed to shoot the animal. That is why I am thinking she may need a repeater aslo I will be honest if she botches the shot which she shouldn't do as she shoots good I will probably be taking the second shot regardless. Our laws say we cannot when mentoring but I am not going to let a wounded animal get away.

Thems is pretty strange laws 7mm...seems to me that a backup rifle would be mandatory when mentoring, not the other way 'round.
