LOL! And I don't even particularly like cats... But I was really referring to the muzzle flash!

Temp is 27 deg F, no wind chrony beta master F1. 10' in front of muzzle
Loaded up 22grs of alliant 300 mp behind a 300gr nosler jhp with cci large pistol primer 1.665 oal
Gun: Super Redhawk 44mag 9 1/2" barrel stainless
Fired 5 rounds before testing to warm barrel and cyl up.
Fired 10 rounds with 45 seconds in between each shot.
Shot 01: 1330 fps
Shot 02: 1295 fps
Shot 03: 1330 fps
Shot 04: 1320 fps
Shot 05: 1330 fps
Shot 06: 1320 fps
Shot 07: 1310 fps
Shot 08: 1350 fps
Shot 09: 1320 fps
Shot 10: 1330 fps
Average: 1323.5 fps
Extreme spread: 55 fps

Recoil is very stiff, no problems at all removing spent cases. The oal is what was recommended for the
bullet with this caliber according to their loading guide. I am very impressed with this new powder
as alliant says it will also work with 30/06 size cases. Next trip out, if it ever warms up, I will
take the camera out and do some accuracy tests, should be interesting. Very Happy

That was with a Speer bullet.

Does it line up with the second cannular on the Nosler ???

I use to have W296 load data for that second groove.......shot that one in a Blackhawk too. Very Happy

The Nosler bullets I have are #42069 and have a single cannular groove and I seated the bullet to the bottom of the cannular groove.

And just before heading into work, I stopped at the local gun shop to buy some more of 300mp and he has been on backorder for 2 months. Did check Midway and they have it listed as available. Hopefully the gun shop can get the backorder in rather then paying the haz/mat and handling fees if I order online.

For the standard pistol cartridges I've had good results with Winchester-231. For the Magnum cartridges Winchester-296 is an excellent powder, but not very versatile. I'm not one to attempt to change the .38 Special into a mild .357 Magnum. I'm an old goat, 77, so I'm not into hot roding' either with cars or firearms. I have learned a thing or two in the 57 years or so that I've been loading.

After work today, I took the liberty of loading up 50 rounds using alliant 300mp with the 44mag. Headed out to friends farm in the county and set up targets at 50 yards. Trying to work up an accurate load.

Temp was 87 deg F, no wind chrony beta master F1. 10' in front of muzzle
Loaded up 22grs of alliant 300 mp behind a 300gr nosler jhp with cci large pistol primer 1.665 oal, light crimp at cannular.
Gun: Super Redhawk 44mag 9 1/2" barrel stainless
After a few warm up shots.
Shot 01: 1420 fps
Shot 02: 1385 fps
Shot 03: 1410 fps
Shot 04: 1410 fps
Shot 05: 1380 fps
Shot 06: 1420 fps
Shot 07: 1400 fps
Shot 08: 1380 fps
Shot 09: 1380 fps
Shot 10: 1430 fps
Average: 1401.5 fps
Extreme spread: 50 fps

This is the exact same powder and charge I used back in Jan of this year and with warmer weather there was an almost 100fps increase in MV. I had no problems with any loads or with extraction. But I have to find out if this powder is temp sensitive. If so, then I will have to back off on the charge during summer. Has anyone else noticed this when using this powder? All powder were weighed on a 505 scale before dumping into case.

All powders are temp sensative. Some more so than others- esp if you are on the upper end of the safe pressure side of things in cold weather. For summer loads back it down at least a half grain and redo. OCW will guide ya- pick the middle load so you have wiggle room either way. That's a big bullet haulin' a**. Pressure goes from safe to way too much in a flash in hot temps when yer on the cusp to begin with in cold weather.

Temperature sensative? Especially AA powders and AA #5 is real bad.

I pulled 40 bullets Wednesday night and dumped all the powder out and reweighed the charge down to 19grs. Yeah I know some powders are more sensitive then others, and one of them was RL-19 that I use on my 340 wtby.
If the weather cooperates I be headed out for a range test tomorrow.

Are them cases growing any?
Also curious as to how slow this stuff is and no mag primer. I use Rem standard's w/ H110...sames puhlenty slow in a long tube- but it's gotta be right or it's gritty. Also- watch for throat errosion on them incomplete burners/slow powders, the kernals scour damage it (graphite carpenters pencil applied to same area seems to help- so I've read).

Short tube H110 or slower? WAY too slow for target stuff. Even 800x is pretty slow for short tube stuff- just not enough tunnel for all that stuff to burn. Cold weather makes it worse. Cold weather turns slow burners into molasses.

Fer long and short tube bear loads I'll by same from Corbon etc. I'll load up huntin/target loads for myself but, for fur 'n fang? Plenty of over the counter stuff for that w/ a TON of punch and all the homeworks been done already.

Ya did right by STARTing over. Ya got yer winter load. But it's MAX.
Near 100'/ps gain is huge in a pistol w/ a heavy for caliber pill. Taking a winter load that's MAX out in 80-90* heat is really asking for it! I won't shoot a MAX load of anything in a pistol- simply and absolutely no reason for it for me anyways.

Love them composition grips on yer Ruger Omni. Here's a pic of one of mine...but I dont think I can shoot a lost of cast 300gr loads ni it unless I do some more research as the OAL is too long for these chambers w/ a lot of bullets and this one dont eat cast. Frgot how long my chambers are on this one. That's why I got an Alaskan in 44m. for a back up for the heavy's.

Very Happy No cases aren't growing. This is a new powder made by alliant and pretty slow burning designed for magnum handguns. When I first got this powder back in Dec or Jan, it came with a sheet of listed loads since it was a new powder. The top load for a nosler 300gr bullet was 24grs, so I started off at 22grs back in January and had pretty good results with that load back in January temps.

Now here's the kicker, after I shot the latest 10 rounds and gave it a rest, I downloaded the latest alliant loading data and now find that the max load for the nosler 300gr is 22gr?? Shocked

So thats one reason I backed down to 19grs, now the question is why did they change max load data? I really think it has to do with lawyers, the reason is that for so many years I have seen loads reduced over the last 25 years or so. What was safe with a 30/06 back in 1972 handloaders digest for a 180gr Hornady soft point spire, (remember them) had this bullet at 2800fps with 47.8grs of imr 3031. Now if you go to Hodgdons site, they don't even list imr 3031 for a 180gr load anymore.

Not to stir anything up, but I do believe they purposely downgrade loads that are available to us handloaders.

Feel free to flame me.

Well- if the cases aint shaggin' out then...but still. That's a lot of boom for a 44m case. my H110 loads/heavy crimps wear them out a lot faster than my 800x/heavy crimp loads do.

Nope- yer right. Also- sometimes they're right for various reasons. But, there's just so many different chambers and tubes for the same caliber now so they play it safe. Toss people into the mix and...well..kaboom!

Still- if ya gain 100'/ps w/ a 300gr pill by it simply getting warmer outside. that tells me that load is super weather sensative. Toss them in the trunk for a nice long ride on a 95* day and you could be in for a nasty surpise. Them winter velocities are more than adequate for 50-75y hunting with that pill.

Ya know what else I'd like a set of them stocks you have on your SBH for my Alaskan. I really like the look and feel of those. My Alaskan has a giant Hogue mono from the factory, it's like a rubber pillow and it's Huge. I'd like a slightly smaller set of stocks for carry...they are fine for pactice but they are massive and sticky for carry...I'm not sure if they make those anymore or where to get same other than calling Ruger.
