Have a look at this. Blows a lot of movie scenes away with the truth about shooting.

The Box O Truth

I believe that there are also some other links within the website to some more firearms related sites.

Wow, someone finally published it in full detail Very Happy .

About 15 years ago i tried that and found that the ones used in tv were major props wtf ....Because inorder to get the locks (or the ones i was using) open, you had to shoot in the 1/3 area of where the latch holds.

I think i may have too much time on my hands as a young adult Laughing .

A friend of mine tried to shoot a lock like that with his 30-06. He hit high right on the top rounded bar and it sheared it off clean as can be and the lock fell to the ground.

Interesting Article though.

Very enlightening. I will never believe the movies again. All the best...

?? Why would someone want to shoot a lock?

Once in awhile we encounter an overly active rancher that will block public right of way or access to National Forest by locking a gate. Here, bolt cutters (big bolt cutters) work fine. And, they are quiet.

Handloader,

I'm sorry to hear about the ranchers. Sad

As for shooting a lock, maybe you have one of thouse safety combination locks that prevent bolt cutters or thouse circular locks that have almost no room for bolt cutters and all you can think of is a gun ?? Laughing

Or maybe your like 10Ring and got too much time on your hands and rather do something the fun way Very Happy

After a lengthy discusion with Vince I still am not convinced as to the validity of the test by the site that Vince provided...If you look closely to way they are shooting the locks in the movies you will notice that they are shooting down on top of the lock, not AT the lock. Hence forcing the body down and away from the hasp. The same way you would do if you used a ballpeen to break the same lock. And in conclusion...Remember in the old days they did not have the quality of locks as we have today and they were mostly made of brass. My conclusion?? The site, not being objective enough to suit me. Non-conclusive....

By The Way...I have busted many a lock with a 16 oz ballpeen...

Yep, I have to agree Bushy. Have you had a chance to have a look at the rest of the articles he has in this site? Some pretty odd ball stuff. The way he recommends cleaning a shotgun you have to see to believe, well not believe but .... well just have a look, you can decide for yourself.

Cheers, Vince

With the danger of a bullet bouncing around off of lock at close range, I would just use the winch on my truck and pull the whole freaking gate or door off. For entering a locked door, a 12 gauge round in each of the hinges works well.

Hummmm...Sounds like shootin' at the hinges would be just as bad as shootin' at the locks...If you have to shoot the lock or the hinges you must not belong on the other side or in that strong box in the first place...I have keys to all my locks... Very Happy

Bushmaster,

Sometimes you need to break into your own home for some reason or another Very Happy

Now shooting the door is alittle extreme but I've had to break into my moms house before because people forgot there keys in the house when the lock automaticly locks the moment you close the door! Mad

Took me a good 30 secounds to get into the house though, went through a window. ROFL Remember people dont leave your windows open not even a little bit! A simple screen cant stop someone armed with nothing but a pocket knife! Shocked Cool

Anyways this is Off Topic

No it's not...Shootin' doors or locks is about the same. None of which have I done or hope to do in the future...

Bushmaster,

I agree shooting a door is somehting I wouldnt do. I said me talking about having to break in before as being off topic not shooting a door instead of the lock. Smile

Remember people keep your windows closed! Laughing

With the modern technology, and the strength in locks, police are more inclined to target the hinge side of the door with their forced entrys.
