They are closing the silhouette matches for the winter and I shot a 26/40 for top honors. It is the best (by one) score I have gotten since I started shooting in the matches. There was an old Marine shooting that was right behind my score so it should get interesting when we start back up in April.
I am still shooting in AA class but when I get up to 29/40 I slip into the AAA class. I have to shoot 35/40 or better to be in the "master" class - that used to be called AAA when I was shooting Hunter's Pistol. I was top AAA shooter with my Ruger 357 revolver against Contenders and some other rather exotic handguns including some with scopes. Back then I could still see my front sight and the target - can't do that today at 100 yards.

Great work Paul...handgun IHMSA is not an easy match. The last match I shot was in 1991...shot a 36/40 with my Production 30.30 10" BBL TC Contender. Would have won the match and been Club Champion that year but had to shoot off against a mate. We were shooting "feeding" chickens at 200 yards and I lost out by one target. I loved that match.

Like you, I can't see the sights anymore which is why I gave up pistol shooting and sold my pistols.

I'll never go to a match if that's what you gotta do....I always thought the shooting was the business part, not the doin yer business. Vinnie's been constipated since 1991, someone give em a dose of chili er summptin.

We shoot 22LR and trust me, an optical sight is a necessary evil. You can see your target and the crosshairs but getting them to line up together is the hard part. The rifles are fired from a standing position, no slings, from the shoulder with no part of your arms in contact with your body for support (except where they attach).

I have never fired at any real animal from that position and under those constraints - there is always a rest to use. In this game they make it hard on you.
Think of it this way - the 20 yard chicken is a 1" circle, the 40 yard pig and the 60 yard turkey are 2" circles and the 80 yard ram is two overlapping 2" circles. From a bench it would not be too hard except when the wind is blowing but standing and shooting offhand? Not so easy.

as for the ammo I am using the Winchester Wildcat ammo which is not as accurate in my rifle as the Remington "high velocity" green box ammo but I have more of the wildcat and they do not shoot to the same POI at all.

On the good side, I have improved with every match and if I continue to practice (which I will) by the next match I should be shooting at least AAA.

Thanks for the congrats everyone.

Improving...great stuff mate. Try the Federal Champion ammo. I buy it in a box of 525 and it is very accurate, and it's only $29 a box here at the moment.

Rimfire silhouette with a rifle...only ever tried that once and it is heaps harder than pistol silhouette. I was hard pressed to hit anything. Laughing I have often thought about having a try at centrefire rifle silhouette...but out to 500 yards, off-hand...nah...ain't gonna happen with my eyes and shakes. Embarassed Laughing

Yeah Bushy...sold my Ruger Mk1 rimfire pistol, my 586 .357 Mag revolver and my 10" 30.30 TC Contender. I didn't want to mate, but the Govt made it too difficult for me to continue, so I gave them, and my licence, up. I got near enough $5K for my pistols and associated paraphernalia so I was able to buy my .243 rifle and 12g shotgun along with some other bits and pieces...and gave SWMBO a gift of $2.5K.

Suz...constipated since 1991...that means I'm fulla Shocked wtf ...hey hang on...I could be a Politician. Very Happy Very Happy Cool

Thanks Pete...in mitigation, it was rather late at night mate.
