Winchester Says Good-Bye To The 9422

January 1, 2005
MORGAN, UTAH— Since 1972, Winchester® has built one of the most famous and best loved rimfires on the market: the Model 9422. More than just a rimfire rifle, it is a foundation for learning accuracy, safety and building good memories. Model 9422s are appreciated by firearms aficionados and first-time buyers alike. The smooth, fluid action, special target crowns for improved accuracy and excellent fit and finish were all the evidence necessary to show that they were built to higher standards than other rimfires. Now, after 33 years, production of the time- honored Model 9422 is ending. The tooling is being retired, and the production line at the New Haven, Connecticut facility will stop. Never again will you have the opportunity to purchase rifles like these final production 9422s. In a well-deserved final applause, a special, limited edition run of only 9,422 will be produced in a Tribute Series, and 222 in the Custom Edition. Do not delay in selecting your rifle, you won’t get a second chance.
As a final tribute, Winchester will offer five models.

Suggested Retail
• High Grade Traditional - $1050 Long Rifle, $1078 WMR
• High Grade Legacy - $1085 Long Rifle, $1113 WMR
• Special Edition Traditional- $ 516 Long Rifle, $ 545 WMR
• Special Edition Legacy.- $551 Long Rifle, $579 WMR

Industery news- Effective March 31, 2006 Winchester will close it's New Haven, CT. plant. And discontinue producion of the Model 94 lever action rifles. Model 70 bold action rifles, and Model 1300 shotguns. As a result supplies of Winchester rifles are limited, and expect prices to go up.

Anyone who believes the Model 94 and its iterations are gone forever, along with the Model 70, may be over reacting a bit. Both will return and be available again and, I would predict, before the decade is out.

Winchester did NOT say goodbye to these models. USRAC did. Plans are already under consideration as to when and where the new rifles will be made, IMO. To whom Olin will license the rights is anyone's guess at this point, but, the value of the Winchester name is such that numerous parties would be interested in using it, I believe, and Olin is undoubtedly interested in licensing it.

I agree with you Handloader, it's just another way to sc**w the gun buyer with inflated prices. It's happened many times before and is going to happen again. I think if they would have left the WSM bull ship alone Winchester wouldn't be in financial trouble. It must have cost a fortune to retool for the short mag. JMHO

1895SS: Actually some of the WSMs will probably survive, the 300 and the 270 both having some merit. The WSSMs, however, are wilting on the shelves of dealers nationwide. I agree that it contributed to the financial problems.

Reloading for the WSM/WSSMs requires specialed loading blocks and powder funnels, another detriment to sales.

There is a rumor that Pederrsolli of Italy will be buying the rights for the 94's and the 70's. Just a rumor though, at the local gunshop.

That doesn't suprise me at all Crackshot. I have heard a simular rumor without detail of whom, however, it was a European buyer looking into books and profit margins. Time will tell on this one.
