Im a New Zealander coming to the USA in late November 2009, going to New York and Washington for about 2 weeks. Via the internet Ive already found the NRA museum in Washington and will go and have alooksee. I want to see a "real " american gunshop with all the goodies and I'm really interested in buying a range finder as your prices are well below ours including the exchange rate. In Washington and New York I can't find Jack in the way of gunshops etc....any assistance greatly received.
Unfortunately I have had to bring the missus as its our 20th wedding anniversay but hey thats the trade off. hee hee - Radar

You won't find any gun shops in DC or NYC, however if you cross the river into Virginia you could look up Blueridge Arsenal NW of Fairfax, Potomac Arsenal in Arlington, Dawson's in Woodbridge, and Gilbert's just south of Arlington. It's been nearly 3 years since I've been in the DC area, but I believe they are still in business.

I thought NYC was a bit up tight about guns, but Washington I can understand, thankx for the headsup.

I aint familiar with the east coast so..

But Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops etc should be able to supply ya.

If yer looking for a "local" shop try the Yellow Pages in a phone book or dial 411 and ask the operator for same when ya get into town.

Just remember that the inhabitants of NYC and Washington DC aren't your "average American". If you want to see the real thing get out of those places and visit the smaller towns and countryside.

If I’m not mistaken Beretta and H&H have Galleries or museums in NY!!!
Not the average gun shop but if your there.........

If you are going to land in NY and drive to DC then you will go down the east coast about 300 miles, as I recall. You will find a Cabellas in East Rutherford, New Jersey and a bass Pro in Baltamore, Maryland. You will also find the smaller shops in towns all along the route. If you get a map, look at the route you want to take then google gun shops in the larger towns it should turn out pretty good.

Now if you do get a chance to go north past the NY, CT and MA crazy corridor you would get to ME, NH and VT and a lot of great old shops in those states.

If you go south past DC, just about every town of any size will have a shop if not several for the Carolinas and Virginia, etc.

Cabelas and Bass pro are great places and you will have some fun looking at all the deer, turkey, elk and many other mounts they have. I haven't been to either of those shops in those locations, but both Cabelas and Bass Pro usually have a fine selection of firearms and also a side room with some rather pricey selections - both stores are huge and you will want to make sure the Mrs. is in a good mood and up for the challenge as it is a total man cave - I know my wife only enjoys going there for just so long as I can burn a good couple hours in either one of those store chains. If you are in the DC area, you might want to try and burn up a day at the Smithsonian - try and focus in on the firearms section - the place is huge and you won't see even a portion in a day - but I am sure they have a firearms section and you will probably see some famous guns and one of the better collections in the world.

If you can pick only one, I'd suggest going to Cabelas its a better store in my opinion. I wish it opened up here instead of Bass Pro.
